  • Federer takes on Mathieu for spot in fourth round

    9/4/10 6:08 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer takes on Mathieu for spot in fourth round Roger Federer will resume his U.S. Open campaign inside Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday afternoon. His opponent is unseeded Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu.

Roger Federer and Paul-Henri Mathieu will be squaring off for the fifth time in their careers when they do battle in the third round of the U.S. Open on Saturday. Federer is dominating the head-to-head series 4-0 and he has dropped only one of 11 sets against Mathieu.

More of the same could continue on Saturday, as Federer is in fine form at the moment. The second-ranked Swiss won the Cincinnati title and is showing no signs of slowing down at the season's final Grand Slam. He cruised past Brian Dabul in round one and routed Andreas Beck on Thursday. Federer is now 4-10 for his 2010 campaign and he has won 43 of his past 44 U.S. Open matches.

Mathieu has not enjoyed a stellar year, mostly because of injury problems. Nonetheless, the 109th-ranked Frenchman appears to heating up just in time to salvage his season. Mathieu upset Lleyton Hewitt in five sets to kick off his U.S. open and rolled over countryman Guillaume Rufin on Thursday.

"It will be a very difficult match," the underdog explained. "I have nothing to lose. It is better to approach this match without fear."

Even if Mathieu plays fearless, aggressive tennis, it almost certainly will not be enough. He could be competitive most of the way, but both past history and current form suggest that Federer will get the job done in straight sets.
