  • Djokovic faces Blake in marquee Saturday evening clash

    9/4/10 6:58 AM | Kelli DeMario
Djokovic faces Blake in marquee Saturday evening clash World No. 3 Novak Djokovic is slated to meet hometown crowd favorite James Blake on Saturday. The players are vying for a spot in the US Open round of 16.

Third seed Novak Djokovic will attempt to post his second victory over opponent James Blake Saturday night. The Serb holds a 1-0 edge, having captured their only previous meeting at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Djokovic recorded a 6-3, 7-6(4) success en route to securing an Olympic bronze medal.

The World No. 3 looks to have recovered fully from a grueling opening-round battle with compatriot Viktor Troicki. The 23-year-old fought through searing heat to seal a 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win in three hours and 40 minutes. Djokovic enjoyed an easier run in round two, having downed Philipp Petzschner of Germany in straight sets.

The 2007 US Open finalist is bidding for his 41st victory of the season on Saturday.

World No. 108 James Blake opened his 2010 US Open bid with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win against Belgian Kristof Vliegen. The American veteran continued the momentum into round two, where he rallied to oust Peter Polansky of Canada in four sets.

With a victory Saturday night, Blake is through to his first round of 16 berth since 2007.

Prediction: Expect native New Yorker Blake to have strong crowd support at night. Promises to be a competitive match with Djokovic moving ahead in four sets.

dokovic to win this one pretty comfortably. didn't see blake this tournament but the opponents he beat were not strong...

blake played really good against polansky, nice hitting.

rfzr , 9/4/10 4:00 PM

djoker in straight sets

spicypumpkin , 9/4/10 6:59 PM

unless blake wakes up, its 3 easy sets

mriiidula , 9/5/10 1:58 AM

okay, i take that back. didnt expect djokovic to drop his level this drastically.

mriiidula , 9/5/10 2:06 AM

Djokovic just toying with Blake.

smr , 9/5/10 2:12 AM

So true, smr - now he goes up two sets to zip and I wonder if we'll ever see Jas.B at this event again.

Wouldn't bet on it.

Novak irresistible - can he make the final this year?

gorafago , 9/5/10 2:38 AM

so far so good.

mriiidula , 9/5/10 2:38 AM

OMG mriii, what time is it chez vous...?

gorafago , 9/5/10 2:48 AM

6.20AM. Woke up at 4.45 to watch this :)

mriiidula , 9/5/10 2:49 AM

djokovic is fluffing some easy ones. sigh.

mriiidula , 9/5/10 2:56 AM

yea. not happy with djok's level at all.

so tired of American commentators and so-called experts talking as if blake actually had a shot at beating him tho! i think nole beats fish too on monday, albeit in a tough match. unless he wakes up on the wrong side of the bed again.

stu , 9/5/10 3:02 AM

Nah james blake CAN be dangerous. He played really well during the second set.
I think he'll beat Fish too, but it'll be a lot harder than tonight for sure.

mriiidula , 9/5/10 3:04 AM

By 'he' i mean djokovic of course.

Game, set, match. I'm going back to bed.

mriiidula , 9/5/10 3:06 AM

blake might have been dangerous a few years ago. this was just an okay match for both. have a good sunday mriiidula!

stu , 9/5/10 3:08 AM

too many UEs ...

rfzr , 9/5/10 3:08 AM

too few winners ...

stu , 9/5/10 3:09 AM

if Roddick hadn't lost, Nole would have to take out 3 Americans back-to-back to make the semis!

stu , 9/5/10 3:12 AM

Nicely done Nole...
At least I didn't get up in the middle of the night for nothing :-)...
Let's go fishing now...

zare , 9/5/10 3:12 AM

4 aces only, has to be at least 10 ...

rfzr , 9/5/10 3:15 AM

fish had an error-ridden r3 match too. i hope its not an ugly match on monday, i wanna be able to evaluate novak's form based on that match.

stu , 9/5/10 3:22 AM

"4 aces only, has to be at least 10 ..."
rfzr, 9/5/10 3:15 AM

baby steps, rfzr. earlier this year, the #aces -#dfs statistic averaged about -5. now it averages 0. headed in the right direction!

stu , 9/5/10 3:30 AM

stu, don't start a brawl during the match ;)

rfzr , 9/5/10 4:58 AM

Hi Novak fans: I'd really like 2 c an Andy v Novak final. Do u think there's a possibility? It's time our boys stepped up their games. They both have such talent, it's time for some belief.

deuce , 9/5/10 8:06 AM

Hi Nole fans- as expected Nole won. I'm one of those who thinks that Nole can reach the final. Don't be too harsh on Nole, remember it was very windy out there. Nole played well to overcome Blake and the windy condition. Fish next, and I expect Nole to get past Fish to meet Gasquet/Monfils. Go Nole!

luckystar , 9/5/10 8:45 AM

deuce, I'd like to see that final too. I think Murray has a better chance of making it there tho, taking into account form as well as possible opponents.

stu , 9/5/10 7:19 PM

nole has too much respect for roger lately so don't think it'll happen.

rfzr , 9/5/10 7:31 PM

It was more than windy. It was a bloody gale.
