Verdasco, Ferrer look toward third round Fellow countryman Fernando Verdasco and David Ferrer will be in second-round action at the US Open on Friday. The Spaniards are set to battle respective opponents Adrian Mannarino and Benjamin Becker.

    (8) Fernando Verdasco vs. (Q) Adrian Mannarino

Eighth seed Fernando Verdasco has a 1-0 series lead over qualifier Adrian Mannarino heading into their second-round meeting. The pair’s only previous clash went to the Spaniard at the 2009 Australian Open, where he secured a first-round win in straight sets.

Verdasco opened his 2010 US Open effort with a grueling five-set match against Fabio Fognini of Italy. The 26-year-old rallied to a 1-6, 7-5, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 victory in three hours and 20 minutes. The World No. 8 is bidding for his 39th match-win of the season on Friday.

World No. 152 Adrian Mannarino won his first match at the US Open, having defeated first-round opponent Pere Riba, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(1). The 22-year-old French qualifier improved his season record to 1-1 on the ATP World Tour.

    Prediction: Verdasco in straight sets.

    (10) David Ferrer vs. Benjamin Becker

Tenth seed David Ferrer cruised through the opening round with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 success against Alexandr Dolgopolov. The World No. 12 converted seven of 8 break chances through 86 minutes of competition. The Spaniard, looking for his fifth third-round berth in New York, extended his season mark to 43-16.

World No. 70 Benjamin Becker came through his opener with compatriot Daniel Brands in straight sets, 7-6(1), 7-6(5), 6-4. The German struck 17 aces en route to victory in two hours and 18 minutes. The 29-year-old looks to make the US Open third round for the first time since his 2006 debut.

Prediction: Ferrer for the win in four sets.
