John Isner and Julien Benneteau will take the court on Friday at the U.S. Open. They are set for meetings with Marco Chiudinelli and Tommy Robredo, respectively.
Marco Chiudinelli vs. (18) John Isner
Chiudinelli and Isner will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers and second time in the last three Grand Slams when they meet in the second round of the U.S. Open on Friday afternoon. Isner battled through their only previous encounter to prevail 6-7(3), 7-6(3), 7-6(7), 6-4 in round two of the French Open earlier this season.
The 6'9'' American will like his chances against Chiudinelli on a fast hard court. Isner traditionally does his best work this time of year (he reached the U.S. Open fourth round in 2009) and he put ankle concerns to rest by rolling past Frederico Gil in straight sets on Wednesday. Chiudinelli is a mere 13-23 at the ATP level this season, but he dismissed American junior Jack Sock without much trouble in round one. Isner is a much different proposition for the Swiss, and if the world No. 20's sprained ankle continues to improve, he should have little trouble in this one.
Julien Benneteau vs. Tommy Robredo
Seeds Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek have already been eliminated from the 16th of the draw that features these two veterans, so this is a big opportunity for Benneteau and Robredo as they head into a fifth career showdown. Their head-to-head series is tied 2-2, with Robredo winning a lone hard-court encounter earlier this year in Dubai. Benneteau last defeated Robredo two years ago on the indoor carpet of Lyon, using a home-court advantage in France to dominate 6-2, 6-2.
While Robredo won convincingly in Dubai, it has been downhill for him since then. The 28-year-old Spaniard is just 15-18 for his 2010 campaign and he is down at No. 41 in the world. Robredo perhaps gained some much-needed confidence by hammering qualifier Lukas Rosol in the first round. Benneteau, on the other hand, continued to play solid tennis by ousting Stepanek in his opener on Tuesday. The Frenchman, who reached the third round in Cincinnati, is now 26-18 for the year. Based on both current form and the court surface, Benneteau has to be a considerable favorite to advance in no more than four sets.
