American Mardy Fish will take to the court on Thursday in New York as he looks to continue his outstanding summer hard-court season.
Mardy Fish vs. Pablo Cuevas
Mardy Fish, ranked 21 in the world, will take on Uruguayan clay-courter Pablo Cuevas for a spot in the third round. Fish has had the summer of his career, with a pair of titles in Newport and Atlanta and an outstanding run to the final of Cincinnati. The American had an odd 5-set match in the first round against Jan Hajek; the sets he won were 6-0, 6-0, and 6-1, but the match still went the distance.
Despite the strange first round result, Fish is playing oustanding tennis. A clay-courter like Cuevas should not have much to hurt the American with – this one should be over quickly.
Richard Gasquet vs. Nikolay Davydenko
France’s Richard Gasquet has the tough task of Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko in the second round. The two men have met on just two occasions; the split the wins at one each, but they haven’t played since 2005. Davydenko had an injury-filled season, but appears to be finally playing well again. The Russian made the quarterfinals in Cincinnati two weeks ago.
Gasquet is also finally making a comeback. He has plumped his ranking back up to 38 in the world and he also had a decent result in Cincinnati, making the third round before going out to Mardy Fish.
The Frenchman might make this match interesting, but Davydenko should pull this match out in 4.
