  • Federer back in action against Beck

    9/2/10 2:04 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer back in action against Beck Roger Federer will contest his second match of the 2010 U.S. Open on Thursday against Andreas Beck. Jurgen Melzer, Robin Soderling, and Taylor Dent are also taking the court.

Andreas Beck vs. (2) Roger Federer

Federer cruised in routine fashion in his first match at the U.S. Open on Monday and he will be looking for more of the same on Thursday. This is the first time that Beck and Federer will be going head-to-head. It's probably not a good time for Beck to be going up against Federer, as the second-ranked Swiss has won 42 of his past 43 matches at this event and is coming off a title in Cincinnati. Beck is just 8-14 at the ATP level this season and has slipped out of the Top 100 at No. 104. The German, who can be dangerous with a stellar two-handed backhand, eased past countryman Michael Berrer in round one. Federer dominated Brian Dabul, and while this one should be more competitive, count on it ending in straight sets.

    (Q) Ricardas Berankis vs. (13) Jurgen Melzer

Berankis is just 20 years old and Melzer is 29, but you could make the argument that Berankis has already enjoyed more success at the U.S. Open (albeit at the junior level). The Lithuanian captured the 2007 boys title, while Melzer has never made it past the third round. Of course, Melzer had never made it past the third round of any Grand Slam prior to this season, but he suddenly appears to be a different player. The 15th-ranked Austrian reached the quarterfinals at the French Open and made it to round four of Wimbledon. Melzer kicked off his U.S. Open by surviving Dmitry Tursunov on five sets. Berankis qualified for the main draw and then ousted American wild card Ryan Sweeting in four. The world No. 124 has a chance, but Melzer in four sets is the pick.

    (5) Robin Soderling vs. Taylor Dent

Soderling is the heavy favorite on paper against Dent, but he is lucky just to be alive in this tournament. The fifth-ranked Swede had four match points to finish off Andreas Haider-Maurer in straight sets on Monday, but it turned out to be a 7-5, 6-3, 6-7(2), 5-7, 6-4 thriller. Dent, trying to recapture the magic of a trip to the 2009 U.S. Open third round, hammered Alejandro Falla 6-4, 7-5, 6-1. These two big hitters have faced each other three times, with Soderling leading the head-to-head series 2-1 (including a 6-0, 6-1, 6-1 blowout at this year's French Open). Dent will have a much better chance on fast hard courts, just as he did when he beat Soderling at the 2003 U.S. Open. This all comes down to the American's serve and he consistently puts the first one in play while limiting double-faults, Soderling could be in for another five-setter.

Weird interactions with the umpire atm

Federer has to get his own towel, because his blood is on the towel and therefore the ballboys apparently can't touch it. Never seen this before
