Novak Djokovic continues with his difficult draw; he will take on Philipp Petzschner of Germany on Thursday in New York.
The US Open draw was not kind to Novak Djokovic. The Serbian world No. 3 was forced to play countryman Viktor Troicki in the opening round. Excellent serving from Troicki and listless play in the stifling heat from Djokovic almost resulted in a huge upset. Troicki was up 2 sets to 1 and had chances to go up 2 breaks in the 4th set. Djokovic eventually pulled out the 5-set win.
The Serb’s next opponent is Germany’s Philipp Petzschner. The German is ranked No. 52 in the world, largely on the strength of his abilities on grass. Petzschner made the semifinals in Halle this season. The good news for Djokovic is that he has not been at all successful on hard courts this season.
Coming into the US Open, Petzschner had not won a single ATP level match since Wimbledon. This match is scheduled for night-time, which is surely going to be a benefit Djokovic, who has historically had problems with his breathing in the heat.
This should be fairly cut and dry for Djokovic.

i think petzschner will win. he must be dangerous now once he is past the first round in a GS for a change...good luck to both players!

I think Nole can beat Petz. Nole is a better hard court player and the match will be played at night, so no heat issue.
luckystar , 9/2/10 12:15 PM
probably wont stick around for this match tho i would like to see it
petz has a chance
RickyDimon , 9/2/10 1:51 PM
Djokovic to win relatively comfortably I would think.
samprallica , 9/2/10 3:06 PM
sampralica, i'm with you. given the fact that his draw got easier he should be motivated to play good tennis.
rfzr , 9/2/10 3:56 PM
I disagree with Ricky. Petz has been HORRIBLE on hard courts -- no way he keeps up with Nole in this match, especially at night.
cherylmurray , 9/2/10 4:19 PM
Nole has had a history of losing to the most unexpected players. Ricky's got a good strategy: predict Nole upset in every round - people will only remember the time he is right!

"Nole has had a history of losing to the most unexpected players. "
so true. kevin anderson at miami first round. yikes.
mriiidula , 9/2/10 7:03 PM
anyway, glad there is a pre-match thread for this round at least.
mriiidula , 9/2/10 7:04 PM
But that was after winning IW, mriiidula. If I had to pick between that tempermental Nole to this perennial underachiever, I think I'd go with the former.
stu , 9/2/10 7:05 PM
Of course. Me too. He used to win titles then, he averages like 4 a year since 2006 (or 2007?). This year? Grand total: 1.
mriiidula , 9/2/10 7:20 PM
encouraging w forecast for the weekend/next week?

Evening match... finally ...let's go Nole... wake up... make us proud like Tipsy did yesterday....
zare , 9/2/10 10:20 PM
Nole fans, if you had to guess, do you think they will put the Nole-Fish (likely) R4 match first on Monday, or Roger-Melzer (likely?)? I am trying to decide whether to buy tickets for the day session or night, and usually there would be no doubt that the more interesting matchup (Nole-Fish) would play at night but this is on a holiday - Labor Day. Any tips would be appreciated :)
stu , 9/2/10 11:22 PM
stu, tickets for night match would be my choice, definitely. :)
hi, Nole fans, long time no read. :)
come on, Nole, be good tonight, let me sleep for at least 2 hours, please! :)
OllyK , 9/2/10 11:35 PM
Hey OllyK, good to see you back! Like I was saying on tennis-x, if I get tickets for the eve, he will play in the day, and vice versa knowing my luck! Thanks for your input tho!
stu , 9/2/10 11:41 PM
:) Oh, I know, stu, I've met Murphy long ago. :D But, American (who has a veery good results this summer, I'd say) to play a day match - naaah...
OllyK , 9/2/10 11:51 PM
It's a holiday tho. American tennis fans will be watching the match all day, and on that particular day, more people might make it out to Ashe during the day than at night...
stu , 9/2/10 11:57 PM
Hm...tough choice, true, but still...I would go with night session. It doesn't matter if it is working day/weekend/holiday, better match-ups (for audience on stands) will always be at night session... (you will kill me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure this time. :D)
OllyK , 9/3/10 12:16 AM
Hi olly! Nice to see u again :)
Stu - night session methinks. It's just more likely.
The Petz serve is like a bullet isn't it? But so far so good :) though I would have been a lot less disappointed with his outfit if I hadn't been imagining a lovely black and white combo.
mriiidula , 9/3/10 3:13 AM
Hi, mriiidula, it is nice to be back! :)
Crazy serves and crazy strong forehands from Petz, yes. It's good they are too "crazy" from time to time..phew! This is not gonna be an easy one...
I don't like Nole's black ST shirts in general, starting with that one with red fire from the beginning of the year. Too "shiny" for my taste. :/
OllyK , 9/3/10 3:31 AM
1:0 for Nole! Thank you Petz for those UEs. :)
OllyK , 9/3/10 3:36 AM
Petz is getting impatient.
mriiidula , 9/3/10 3:47 AM
Nole's serving has really been impressive today! I'm very pleasantly surprised. Hope it keeps up.
mriiidula , 9/3/10 3:55 AM
He could be even more impatient, if you ask me. :D
I just noticed that Nole's shirt is not black..it's blue. I don't like blue either. :)
OllyK , 9/3/10 3:56 AM
Yeees, service is much better than in R1. And he looks like he is enjoying out there. Give him more night matches, pleeease! :)
OllyK , 9/3/10 4:00 AM
Good match ... pretty close. Djokovic playing well tonight.
smr , 9/3/10 4:03 AM
I like blue as well as black. I just noticed ita blue as well - isnt black and red a better combo? Dont knw what he was thinking.
Agreed. He's been really impressive. Hope he gets night matches more often.
mriiidula , 9/3/10 4:13 AM
bad match from nole so far, too many UEs.
rfzr , 9/3/10 4:16 AM
Rfzr, lots of UEs yes, but much better serving and much better groundstrokes isn't it? A big improvement from R1 IMO.
mriiidula , 9/3/10 4:23 AM
there is no flow in his game and no aggression. and this german guy is a tricky player.
rfzr , 9/3/10 4:25 AM
Oh I thought he was playing quite aggressively. And I think he's hitting more winners than UEs, that's gotta be good.
mriiidula , 9/3/10 4:27 AM
mriiidula, I'm with you. I just feel comfortable watching him play tonight. That's good.
OllyK , 9/3/10 4:31 AM
ok, I didn't mean he should serve 2 doubles in a row. :@
OllyK , 9/3/10 4:33 AM
The only thing I don't like tonight is his aces to DF ratio. But the serves that do go in have been very effective.
Wow, Petz sent a ball high flying into the stands!
mriiidula , 9/3/10 4:36 AM
and breeeeak. :)
I would say it is over and go to sleep but that match with Melzer at FO is still on my mind...
OllyK , 9/3/10 4:41 AM
Oh definitely. Especially since Petz has 3 breakpoints now.
mriiidula , 9/3/10 4:43 AM
Noleee!!!!!! @#$%^&@#$!!!!
OllyK , 9/3/10 4:44 AM
stu i'd say save your money.
rfzr , 9/3/10 4:45 AM
Sigh.
It doesn't help that Melzer is in the stands. It's like he's silently telling Petz "It's not over til it's over. Believe me, I know."
mriiidula , 9/3/10 4:46 AM
Melzer is on stands. That must be the reason! :) I'm so mad right now.
Come on Nole, break him again right about NOW!
OllyK , 9/3/10 4:46 AM
haha, mriiidula, same thinking. :)
break...NOT!
OllyK , 9/3/10 4:48 AM
Haha :)
Nole. Is. Falling. Apart.
mriiidula , 9/3/10 4:49 AM
The last 15 mins have NOT been impressive.
mriiidula , 9/3/10 4:54 AM
Horrible. I have headache since Melzer's break...
New break point..come on, Nole!
OllyK , 9/3/10 4:56 AM
I think he has flash backs from FO now, too.
OllyK , 9/3/10 4:59 AM
This mess is his own fault. The match should have ended some time ago, and now he's serving to stay in the third. Sucks.
mriiidula , 9/3/10 4:59 AM
TB, here we go. Nails, bye-bye.
OllyK , 9/3/10 5:02 AM
I hate tie breaks. They're way too nerve wrecking.
Please get this over and done with Nole!
Great, mini break to Petz. Damn.
mriiidula , 9/3/10 5:03 AM
Ok, I'm gonna kill him. After winning great point to send ball in the net
OllyK , 9/3/10 5:07 AM
Great rally, and then he fluffs an easy one. WHY.
mriiidula , 9/3/10 5:07 AM
OK, now, just stay FOCUSSED NOLE, pls!
OllyK , 9/3/10 5:09 AM
DF on match point!!!! :@@@
OllyK , 9/3/10 5:10 AM
DF?! Are u kidding me?!
mriiidula , 9/3/10 5:11 AM
And he won in 3. Pheeew. Horrible 3rd set.
OllyK , 9/3/10 5:14 AM
On to R3. Apart from a couple of points, Nole got REALLY lucky I'm this TB.
mriiidula , 9/3/10 5:14 AM
Typo, I meant 'in'. Agreed, awful 3rd set.
mriiidula , 9/3/10 5:16 AM
I don't know what to expect on Saturday. :/
Good night (or good morning, it's 5:16 AM here)!
OllyK , 9/3/10 5:16 AM
It's 8.51 am for me. So imma stay awake I guess.
mriiidula , 9/3/10 5:20 AM
It's 8.51 am for me. So imma stay awake I guess.
Hope the third round goes a lil bit better.
mriiidula , 9/3/10 5:21 AM
Congrats to Nole for the win. Not spectacular but enough for the win, as expected. Blake may not be an easy opponent next for Nole, as he should have home support. Nole must certainly improve on his game of today and be ready for his next challenge. Go Nole!
luckystar , 9/3/10 5:40 AM
well win is a win, he should've closed it sooner tho ...
