Fellow countrymen Fernando Verdasco and David Ferrer will kick off their 2010 US Open bids on Tuesday. The seeded Spaniards are in action against respective opponents Fabio Fognini and Alexandr Dolgopolov.
(8) Fernando Verdasco vs. Fabio Fognini
Eighth seed Fernando Verdasco leads first-round challenger Fabio Fognini 2-1 in the head-to-head series. The pair last clashed at Wimbledon in late June, where a first-round battle went to the Italian in four sets, 7-6(9), 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-4. The players are set to contest their first match on hard-court.
Verdasco enters into his eighth US Open with a 37-16 season record. The 26-year-old looks to regroup after suffering early-round losses in Toronto and Cincinnati. The Madrid native makes his return to competition following a second-round defeat to Mardy Fish in Canada. Verdasco will be defending quarterfinal points in New York, having made the last eight in 2009 (lost to Djokovic).
World No. 86 Fabio Fognini is set to contest his first main-draw event since Toronto. The 23-year-old, who commences the US Open 14-21 for the year, failed to qualify for both Cincinnati and New Haven. The Italian will attempt to record his first career victory at the US Open Tuesday afternoon.
(10) David Ferrer vs. Alexandr Dolgopolov
Tenth seed David Ferrer holds a 1-0 edge against opponent Alexandr Dolgopolov heading into their opening-round match. The Spaniard won their only previous match this summer, having rallied to a first-round, three-set success at the Masters 1000 Cincinnati.
Ferrer begins the 2010 US Open with a 42-16 record in 2010. The 28-year-old pocketed two hard-court wins prior to the event, as he finished among the final 16 in Cincinnati (lost to Davydenko). The 2007 semifinalist is competing in his eighth US Open.
The 45th-ranked Dolgopolov will make his US Open debut on Tuesday. The 21-year-old heads back to the court after booking a round of 16 berth in New Haven (lost to Troicki). Dolgopolov has amassed a 14-16 record for the 2010 season.
