Robin Soderling will kick off his 2010 U.S. Open big against Andreas Haider-Maurer on Monday. Kei Nishikori and Marin Cilic are also looking for places in the second round.
(5) Robin Soderling vs. (Q) Andreas Haider-Maurer
Soderling has been a Grand Slam force over the past two seasons and he will begin his quest for more of the same at this year's U.S. Open on Monday afternoon. The Swede finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the French Open and reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals, also losing to Nadal. He is ranked 209 spots ahead of his opponent at No. 5 in the world. Haider-Maurer did well to qualify over the weekend and this will be his first appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam. The 23-year-old Austrian is 1-1 at the ATP level this season and 2-4 for his career. Expect Soderling to dispatch the underdog in three quick sets.
(Q) Kei Nishikori vs. Evgeny Korolev
Nishikori and Korolev will be meeting for the first time in their careers when they do battle in an intriguing first-round clash on Monday. Neither man is in the midst of a memorable season, but both have gained confidence over the past few days. Nishikori, plagued by an elbow problem for two years now, won three qualifying matches to earn a place in the main draw. Korolev, 12-19 at the ATP level this season, made it to the New Haven quarterfinals before succumbing to Thiemo De Bakker. The Kazakh will try to blow his opponent off the court, while Nishikori will look to keep the ball in play from the back of the court. Advantage: Nishikori in four sets.
Illya Marchenko vs. (11) Marin Cilic
Cilic was a 2009 U.S. Open quarterfinalist following a huge upset of Andy Murray, but he does not look poised for a repeat performance. Aside from a semifinal showing in Washington, the 6'6'' Croat has done absolutely nothing since the French Open. Cilic cannot waste any time emerging from this slump because he face a first-ever encounter with Marchenko on Monday. The 22-year-old Ukrainian has earned 15 of his 21 career match victories this season and he is up to No. 73 in the world. If Cilic does not get his act together, this could be one of the more competitive matches of the entire first round. The No. 11 seed in five sets is the pick.

ouch, he missed a smash and we are heading into the fifth. söderling doesn't show a thing, he is beginning to behave a bit like borg's stone face

h-m really playing high risk tennis and having an ON day... söderling still has routine enough to win this kind of match, but an upset is imminent

are you sure? he usually shakes hand with the empire first while waiting for the opponent to come up to the net.

Cilic vs Nishikori in the next round, interesting. I like both but I like Cilic more, so hope for a Cilic win. I'm waiting for Cilic and Sod to meet and a Cilic win over Sod. Anyway whoever gets to the QF in this section, I hope he provides some test, some trying times for Fed. I don't wish to see Fed moves through his quarter unchallenged and fresh as daisy and beat up a tired opponent in the semifinal.

He has a nasty temper. Apparently he used to throw terrible tantrums as a child!
