Frenchmen Richard Gasquet and Gael Monfils will take to the court on Monday as the 2010 US Open gets underway.
Richard Gasquet vs. Simon Greul
Germany’s Simon Greul is not the easiest first round opponent for Richard Gasquet. The German secured his first ever win over Gasquet earlier this year in Indian Wells. The good news for the Frenchman is that he is playing better tennis now than he was back then. The Frenchman made up some ground during the European clay court swing and his ranking now sits at No. 38 in the world.
Greul did not even manage to qualify for Cincinnati and he lost in the opening round in New Haven. Gasquet looks well-positioned to move into the second round at Flushing Meadows.
Gael Monfils vs. Robert Kendrick
If ever there was a time for American Robert Kendrick to upset a seed, it’s right here. Monfils has done well enough on clay this year, but he’s struggled on hard courts. The No. 17 seed lost in the first round of Cincinnati to Alejandro Falla. Kendrick is ranked No. 148 in the world, a testament to his inconsistency. The American has a big serve, but errors and shot selection cost him match wins.
Monfils should find a way out of this match, but if Kendrick has a particularly good serving day, he could make life difficult for the Frenchman.
