Roger Federer will be featured on opening night at the U.S. Open on Monday against Brian Dabul. Lleyton Hewitt and Paul-Henri Mathieu are also in action.
(2) Roger Federer vs. Brian Dabul
Federer will begin his campaign for a sixth U.S. Open title and 17th career Grand Slam triumph when he takes the court in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday night. The second-ranked Swiss has won 41 of his last 42 matches in Flushing Meadows; the only loss coming to Juan Martin Del Potro in last year's final. Federer has endured a relatively disappointing season, but he heated up just in time for this event with a runner-up showing in Toronto and a second straight title in Cincinnati.
Up first for Federer is Dabul, an unheralded Argentine. Ranked 96th in the world, Dabul has won only five matches at the ATP level this season and just 13 in his 10-year career. Only three of those victories have come on a hard court, although he pocketed two in a surprise trip to the Indian Wells third round this spring. Dabul also reached the Newport semis earlier in the summer, so he is enjoying one of his better years. This, however, is going to be a rude awakening. Count on Federer cruising into round two after three routine sets and no more than an hour and a half.
(32) Lleyton Hewitt vs. Paul-Henri Mathieu
Mathieu and Hewitt will be squaring off for the first time in their careers when they meet on Monday evening inside Louis Armstrong Stadium. Hewitt leads the head-to-head series 3-0, including a lone hard-court win at the Indian Wells Masters five years ago. They most recently faced each other at Queen's Club in 2008, with the Australian prevailing in straight sets.
Hewitt, however, has struggled in 2010. He underwent hip surgery after the Aussie Open and just barely garnered the final seed for this event as the No. 34 player in the world. Mathieu has been dealing with all kinds of physical problems, and a dismal 6-15 record for the season has him down at No. 109 in the ATP rankings. The Frenchman qualified for the Toronto Masters and advanced one round in the Cincinnati main draw, but he lost in New Haven qualifying last week. Mathieu could make this interesting for a while, but look for Hewitt to advance in four sets.

I will be surprised if it takes him 90 minutes! An hour maximum, if that.

Rog.. A tough match continues. Lleyton of Halle. Robin of RG. You were defeated by them. You must beat them. They will have confidence toward a match with you. I am not convinced of your victory. However, I pray for your victory. Roger

Federer came up with another magic moment. In the ninth game of the 2nd set,he conjured from between his legs and his back to the court. Simply amazing.

tennisnba , 8/31/10 5:37 PM
vij - because Nadal's half plays second every round
RickyDimon , 8/31/10 6:28 PM
If that is the case it will be the Friday people who'll be at risk of rain delays.
ed251137 , 8/31/10 6:43 PM
Ricky,
Last year Roger was top seed and Murray second.Roger opened the proceedings.
This year Roger is not the top seed,he is second.Still he opens the proceedings.
We all know how the scheduling, especially at US open, effects one's freshness for the finals.
So ,whether Roger is no 1 seed or no 2 seed,he opens the proceedings ,does that mean something?
vij , 8/31/10 8:40 PM
...and all his matches will be in the nice evening breeze... you can bet it!!!
zare , 8/31/10 8:59 PM
@vij , 8/31/10 8:40 PM
There are a few constants at G.Slams
Rafa & Murray Federer & Djokovic in the same half
Federer gets a dream draw
Federer opens the proceedings
Federer gets the pick of the schedules
Federer always plays on centre court
nadline , 8/31/10 9:23 PM
Federer is
not the defending champion,
he is not world No 1
he is not the No 1 seed
but still enjoys all the privileges as if he was all of the above.

Nadline(Carrie)
I did a little bit more research on who opens proceedings at US open.I went back to 2007.In all the years 2007,2008,2009,2010 Roger opened the proceedings although in 2008 and 2010 Rafa was the top seed.I did not notice the anomaly in 2008 because I suppose I did not expect the organizers to blatantly favor Federer .
I however noticed it at AO 2009.Nadal played a gruelling 5 setter semi final against Verdasco on Friday whereas Federer had his semifinal on Thursday. It suddenly struck me,how come Federer played before Nadal?Nadal was the top seed.
vij , 8/31/10 9:45 PM
....And at AO open 2009,not only was Nadal top seed,Djokovic was the defending champion. So how come Federer played first. The glaring anomaly alerted me.
vij , 8/31/10 9:56 PM
Is it any wonder Federer has 16 gs titles, who wouldn't if the path is always made smooth for them. Just think who is 1st round opponent is and who the others in the top 4 have to play? The bias is so blatant.
vij, we will soon be called bitter and twisted by some people.
nadline , 8/31/10 10:10 PM
Sorry, I'll say that again:
Just think who HIS 1st round opponent is and who the others in the top 4 have to play? The bias is so blatant.
nadline , 8/31/10 10:13 PM
Nadline aka Carrie,
Yes,if we just crib we will be called bitter and twisted or paranoid.
Is there any way,we can voice our protest to the Grand Slam Committee or whatever body is responsible for Grand Slams?
If Nadal wins,it will be a slap in the face for all these manipulative guys just like what happenned at the AO open 2009 where it was a 'tragedy for every body'.
But as we have seen ,it did not dampen the enthusiasm of these guys to continue to load the dice against other players.
So I think we fans need to do our bit by protesting.
vij , 8/31/10 10:33 PM
vij, who were you in your previous life on TT? If you know me as carrie, you must have been posting here a long time.
nadline , 9/1/10 12:14 AM
Nadline,I don't have a previous life.I discovered tennistalk about a month ago.I am new to this site.I know you are Carrie because Cheryl in one of her posts said you preferred to be called Carrie.
vij , 9/1/10 12:44 AM
One thing for sure awaits them (including Roger): KARMA.

Roger Federer is on full alert, and as ready as can be to win this years US Open. He is in great shape, and knows more than anyone what it will take to win this years Flushing Meadows. With Annacone coaching him we can expect less mental lapses, and many more focused aggressive plays. Many of us have seen, and commented on the signs of change with Roger in Toronto, and Cincinnati. I am expecting a Roger Federer who is at the top of his new found confidence (or very near it). A Roger Federer who will display great war like tennis tactics on the court with speed and grace. A Roger who appears once again more fully comfortable with the energy that champions are made of, a resurrection of Roger (of sorts) into the present (within reason lol) :). Playing like a champ and being a champ in Flushing Meadows. A Roger who is in control of his finer skills at the US Open. I believe Roger will do the afore mentioned better than anybody else, and will reap the rewards. Let the games begin... :)
