Andy Murray will be going for his first Grand Slam title as he takes the court in New York over the next fortnight. He might have to get past an in-form Tomas Berdych just to reach the semifinals.
Still looking for his first Grand Slam title, Andy Murray will be hoping to go one step further at this year's U.S. Open than he did at the 2008 event. Murray fell to Roger Federer in the '08 final before being stunned by Marin Cilic in the fourth round last season.
The world No. 4 does not have the easiest of draws this time around, but he certainly can't complain. To say it's not as bad as last year's--when was in the same quarter as an in-form Cilic and eventual champion Juan Martin Del Potro--would be an understatement. Murray is in the same half as Rafael Nadal, but the other half includes Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Robin Soderling, Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish, and Marcos Baghdatis.
Murray's first huge test could come in the form of a quarterfinal showdown against Tomas Berdych. The seventh-seeded Czech is enjoying a breakout year in which he beat Federer in Miami, upset Federer again en route to the Wimbledon final, and also reached the French Open semis. Berdych has a nice draw in New York, as the most dangerous player in his eighth of the draw is an injured John Isner.
Murray opens with Lukas Lacko and could meet Stanislas Wawrinka in the third round. Wawrinka has given Murray plenty of trouble in the past, but the Swiss has been slumping this season and is not at his best on hard courts. Potential fourth-round opponents for Murray include Sam Querrey and Nicolas Almagro. Querrey surprised the Scot this summer in the Los Angeles final, but that was before Murray heated up with a title in Toronto.
First-round matches to watch in this section include Berdych vs. Michael Llodra (who was one spot away from being seeded), Julien Benneteau vs. Radek Stepanek, and Mikhail Youzhny vs. Andrey Golubev.
