  • Federer, Soderling on another U.S. Open collision course

    8/29/10 4:39 PM | Ricky Dimon
Federer, Soderling on another U.S. Open collision course Roger Federer and Robin Soderling have a faced each other in four of the last six Grand Slams. Another meeting could come in this year's U.S. Open quarterfinals.

By winning a second straight Cincinnati Masters title earlier this month, Roger Federer avoided the No. 3 seed and potentially being in the same half of the U.S. Open draw as Rafael Nadal. Federer also avoided Andy Murray, who beat the Swiss in the Toronto final.

A familiar face, however, is in Federer's section of the draw. World No. 5 Robin Soderling is the second highest seed--behind Federer--in the bottom section of the bracket. The two players faced each other in the quarterfinals of the 2009 U.S. Open--Federer won 6-0, 6-3, 6-7(6), 7-6(6)--and they would go head-to-head at that same stage yet again if both players make it that far.

Federer, who is dominating the head-to-head series 12-1, has met Soderling in four of the last six Grand Slams dating back to the 2009 French Open final. The world No. 2 also prevailed at Wimbledon that year, but Soderling scored his lone upset in the quarterfinals of this year's French.

Neither man will be looking ahead to the quarters just yet, but the bottom quarter is a relatively soft one so they have to like their chances. The other seeds in this section are Marin Cilic, Jurgen Melzer, Albert Montanes, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Fernando Gonzalez, and Lleyton Hewitt. The latter three of those six have been dealing with injuries, Cilic is slumping, Montanes is not a hard-court threat, and Melzer has never made it past the third round in New York.

Soderling could be tested by Taylor Dent in round two and Thiemo De Bakker in round three (if De Bakker can get past Gonzalez in the second round). Federer and Hewitt could meet in the third round just as they did at last year's event.
