Upsets have been plentiful in the week leading up to the U.S. Open, and the result is a surprise final in New Haven. Denis Istomin and Sergiy Stakhovsky will battle for the title on Saturday.
Denis Istomin and Sergiy Stakhovsky have faced each other four times at the qualifying and Challenger levels. Their first-ever ATP meeting will come in the final of the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament on Saturday night.
Both finalists have fought through some serious difficulty this week in New Haven. Stakhovsky won a pair of matches in third-set tiebreakers; in his opener against Peter Luczak and then over No. 1 seed Marcos Baghdatis in the quarterfinals. The 47th-ranked Ukrainian dismissed Tommy Robredo in the third round and eased past Thiemo De Bakker in the semis.
Istomin has scored three of his four victories in three sets. The world No. 46 from Uzbekistan kicked off his week with a rout of Benjamin Becker, beat Lukas Lacko in three, saved four match points against Teymuraz Gabashvili before prevailing 10-8 in a third-set tiebreaker in the quarters, then he toppled Viktor Troicki 7-6(10), 3-6, 6-2 to book his spot in the title match.
Both players are in outstanding form this season and poised for career-high rankings heading into the U.S. Open. Istomin is 26-19 for his 2010 campaign and Stakhovsky is 21-18.
This could come down to final experience, as Stakhovsky is 3-0 lifetime in finals (he is now 4-0 lifetime in semifinals). Istomin, on the other hand, is making his first appearance in an ATP title match. Stakhovsky also has the edge having made quick work of his semifinal on Friday, so look for him to prevail in two competitive sets.
