  • De Bakker takes on Stakhovsky, Troicki meets Istomin

    8/27/10 5:44 AM | Ricky Dimon
De Bakker takes on Stakhovsky, Troicki meets Istomin Friday's semifinals in New Haven feature none of the top nine seeds in the tournament. Thiemo De Bakker, Sergiy Stakhovsky, Viktor Troicki, and Denis Istomin are looking for places in the title match.

Sergiy Stakhovsky vs. (12) Thiemo De Bakker

Stakhovsky and De Bakker will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they do battle in the semifinals of the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament on Friday afternoon. De Bakker is the second highest remaining seed in the draw at No. 12 behind Viktor Troicki's No. 10. The 21-year-old Dutchman earned three-set victories over Mikhail Kukushkin and Florian Mayer before cruising past Evgeny Korolev in Thursday's quarterfinals.

Stakhovsky looks poised to capture his fourth career ATP title after an impressive showing on Thursday. The 47th-ranked Ukrainian came back from rainout to upset Tommy Robredo, then later outlasted No. 1 seed Marcos Baghdatis in a third-set tiebreaker. Stakhovsky is now 20-18 this season, but he has to be tired and his opponent is also in fine form. De Bakker in three tight sets is the pick.

    (10) Viktor Troicki vs. (15) Denis Istomin

While Stakhovsky and De Bakker have encountered some difficulty this week, perhaps no player has walked a finer line than Istomin. The world No. 46 from Uzbekistan rolled in his opener against Benjamin Becker, but he needed three sets to beat Lukas Lacko before saving four match points against Teymuraz Gabashvili in the quarters, ultimately prevailing 10-8 in a third-set tiebreaker. Istomin is a stellar 25-19 for his 2010 campaign and set to break into the Top 40.

This is the first time that Istomin and Troicki will face each other at the ATP level; they met three years ago in Moscow qualifying, with Troicki scoring a 6-4, 6-3 win. The 45th-ranked Serb should definitely be the more fresh of the two competitors in this one, as he rocked Radek Stepanek in straight sets following wins over Jarkko Nieminen and Alexandr Dolgopolov. As the rankings suggest, this one could go either way, but the edge goes to Troicki in three.

Victor Troicki beat Victor Troicki???

BTW it seems like a regularity for smaller atp tournaments to lose their top seeds before the final...That illustrates the small differences in the sub-top level of men's tennis I 'd say.

good catch, thanks

especially tournaments right before Grand Slams. Seeds always crash.

and I used to think that losing on purpose is a violation that players get suspended for ;)
