Marcos Baghdatis is looking to keep his hot streak alive on Thursday in New Haven. His quarterfinal opponent in Sergiy Stakhovsky.
Marcos Baghdatis and Sergiy Stakhovsky will be squaring off for the first time in their careers at the ATP level when they meet in the quarterfinals of the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament on Thursday. Their only previous encounter came seven long years ago at a Challenger event in Uzbekistan, where Baghdatis prevailed 7-5, 6-2.
Obviously a lot has changed since then, but Baghdatis is once again a considerable favorite. In fact, the 18th-ranked Cypriot is one of the hottest players on tour right now. He finished runner-up in Washington and reached the semifinals last week in Cincinnati. So far in New Haven, Baghdatis has taken out Igor Andreev and Juan Ignacio Chela, the latter in three sets.
Stakhovsky already played part of a match on Thursday, returning from a washout the night before to defeat Tommy Robredo 7-6(5), 6-2. The 47th-ranked Ukrainian also has win this week over Peter Luczak, and he needed a third-set tiebreaker to do it. Stakhovsky is a respectable 19-18 this season, including one grass-court title.
This might be where Baghdatis' hot streak comes to end and he can finally go to New York for the U.S. Open, but Stakhovsky is a question mark having already spent an hour on court on Thursday. This could go either way, but look for Baghdatis to keep marching after three tight sets.
