Fernando Gonzalez and Radek Stepanek are set for a second-round showdown on Tuesday in New Haven. James Blake and Alexandr Dolgopolov will also take the court.
(LL) Radek Stepanek vs. (3) Fernando Gonzalez
Gonzalez will be playing for the first time since the French Open when he goes up against Stepanek in the second round of the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament on Tuesday afternoon. The 30-year-old Chilean is just 15-7 this season and he has dropped to No. 29 in the world mainly due to a bout with knee tendinitis.
Stepanek has also missed considerable time in 2010 as a result of both fatigue and physical problems. The 31-year-old Czech is just 7-8 this year following a first-round win over Pablo Cuevas on Monday. Stepanek needed a lucky loser entry simply to get into the main draw, as he fell to Teymuraz Gabashvili in qualifying. It's hard to know what to expect from either man, but given Gonzalez's rust, Stepanek in three sets is the pick.
(7) Alexandr Dolgopolov vs. (WC) James Blake
Dolgopolov and Blake will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they meet in the New Haven second round on Tuesday night. Blake has been in dismal form this year, but he clobbered Pere Riba in 35 minutes in front of his home crowd on Monday. The 30-year-old American is just 11-13 in 2010, but he is 11-1 lifetime at this tournament.
On the flip side, Dolgopolov is 21 years old and enjoying a breakout season on tour. The Ukrainian has earned 13 of his 14 career ATP-level victories over the past eight months, but he is relatively unproven for a player ranked 43rd in the world. Dolgopolov is just 14-20 lifetime at this level and although he has the edge in current form, Blake should be feeling good after Monday and will have the crowd behind him. Look for the wild card to score a minor three-set upset.
