No. 1 seed Marcos Baghdatis will play his New Haven opener against Igor Andreev on Monday. Tommy Robredo and Viktor Troicki are also looking for places in the third round.
(1) Marcos Baghdatis vs. Igor Andreev
Baghdatis went deep in Cincinnati, reaching the semifinals before losing to Roger Federer, but his U.S. Open preparation will continue when he takes the court on Tuesday at the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament. The 18th-ranked Cypriot is set for a second career meeting with Andreev. Their only previous encounter came in the fourth round of the 2007 French Open, with Andreev prevailing 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-4. On fast hard courts, the story should be much different. Baghdatis is in outstanding form whereas Andreev has been dealing with an ankle injury. As long as the No. 1 seed shows interest in doing well this week, expect him to advance in straight sets.
(WC) Taylor Dent vs. (6) Tommy Robredo
Dent and Robredo will be squaring off for the second time in their careers when they do battle in the New Haven second round on Tuesday. Robredo prevailed six years ago in Cincinnati bye a 7-6(4), 6-3 decision before Dent got revenge 7-5, 6-3 last season in Miami. Neither man is in great form at the moment, but Robredo has been playing shockingly bad tennis over the past few months. Dent always shows signs of life on fast hard courts, and the American dismissed Eduardo Schwank in three sets on Monday. Robredo has a strong return of serve and that will help him in this one, but Dent in three sets is the pick.
Jarkko Nieminen vs. (10) Viktor Troicki
Nieminen and Troicki will be playing each other for the first time on Tuesday, and it looks like a tossup even though Troicki got a bye as the No. 10 seed while Nieminen is unseeded. The 29-year-old Finn is ranked just 13 spots below his opponent at 58th in the world and he kicked off his week with a straight-set win over Andreas Seppi on Monday. Troicki is a mediocre 22-23 for the season and 3-3 so far during the U.S. Open series. The Serb will get a stern test, but look for him to survive in three competitive sets.

baghdatis is retarded. why do u have to play a tournament just b4 the USO,when you are in excellent form. its in his best interests to lose early.

please don't call him that. it's very rude.

there's a reason why Baghdatis is 2-4 LIFETIME at the US Open

Well if that is the case then well done by Marcos, shows character

maybe, but it doesnt show smarts
we'll see how and what he does in New Haven before jumping to conclusions. I would rather him not uphold his word than tank a match. We'll see.

Maybe Baghdatis feels it's better preparation to play actual games than hit the practise courts for hours a day.
