  • Cilic tangles with Tipsarevic in Washington quarterfinal

    8/6/10 7:45 AM | Kelli DeMario
Cilic tangles with Tipsarevic in Washington quarterfinal Fourth seed Marin Cilic remains on course to reach the final four at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic, as he squares off against Janko Tipsarevic late Friday. The players are contesting their fifth career meeting.

World No. 13 Marin Cilic holds a 4-0 head-to-head series advantage over World No. 41 Janko Tipsarevic prior to their quarterfinal clash in Washington. The 21-year-old has earned four consecutive hard-court victories against his opponent, which includes a 6-1, 6-3 semifinal win at the 2010 tournament in Chennai.

Cilic enters into the quarterfinal with a 33-12 season record. The Croat is bidding for his fifth ATP World Tour semifinal of the year, adding to previous successful runs in Chennai, the Australian Open, Zagreb and Munich.

After recording a routine victory in the second round, Cilic defeated an in-form Mardy Fish to reach the quarterfinal. The 21-year-old held on to oust the 15th-seeded American in three sets late Thursday, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Unseeded Janko Tipsarevic looks to secure his second Tour-level semifinal in as many weeks. The Serb has compiled a 17-14 mark in 2010, bolstered by a trio of wins in Washington. The 26-year-old has yet to drop a set during the tournament, having downed veteran Arnaud Clement, sixth seed Sam Querrey and Alejandro Falla all in straights.

Prediction: Cilic in two close sets.

Yes Cilic wins in two close sets. Finally he is able to string a few wins together. Next up Nalby, win or lose, I hope Cilic put up a good fight. Go Marin.
