  • Roddick opens Washington bid on Tuesday

    8/3/10 3:00 AM | Kelli DeMario
Roddick opens Washington bid on Tuesday Three-time Legg Mason Tennis Classic champion Andy Roddick is set to headline second-round action Tuesday evening, as he opens his 2010 campaign against qualifier Grega Zemlja.

World No. 9 Andy Roddick will begin his quest for a fourth title in Washington, DC on Tuesday. The 27-year-old makes his return to competition following a semifinal finish in Atlanta, where he fell to compatriot Mardy Fish. The American enters into his 9th Legg Mason Classic with a 34-8 season recorded, helped by title-winning runs in Brisbane and Miami.

Roddick has performed consistently well in Washington, having secured three titles since his tournament debut in 2000. The World No. 9 has reached the quarterfinal round or better seven times, which includes his championship finishes in 2001, 2005 and 2007. Roddick narrowly missed out on a fourth title, as he lost a close match to reigning US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro last year.

World No. 128 Grega Zemlja improved his ATP World Tour record to 3-2 after taking out opening-round opponent Benjamin Becker. The 23-year-old recorded his Washington debut victory Monday afternoon, 6-2, 6-3.

Prediction: Roddick for the win in straight sets.
