John Isner and Thiemo De Bakker will go head-to-head on Tuesday night in Washington. De Bakker ousted Isner from Wimbledon one day after the American played the longest match in tennis history.
This time Thiemo De Bakker is the one coming off a long match.
De Bakker and John Isner will be meeting for the second time in their careers and second time in less than two months when they collide in round two of the Legg Mason Classic on Tuesday night. They just recently faced each other at Wimbledon, where Isner beat Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(7), 7-6(3), 70-68 in 11 hours and five minutes after three days of play. Less than 24 hours later, De Bakker routed Isner in 74 minutes.
The roles are not exactly reversed in this second installment, as De Bakker is not exactly exhausted to the extent that Isner was in their previous encounter. Still, while Isner had the benefit of a first-round bye as Washington's No. 5 seed, De Bakker battled past Lukas Lacko 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in two hours and four minutes on Monday night.
De Bakker is now a solid 19-13 for his 2010 campaign and he registers at an impressive 46th in the world rankings. The 21-year-old Dutchman also reached the French Open third round prior to doing the same at the All-England Club.
While there were questions about how Isner would recover from his famous Wimbledon exploits, he put most of those to rest two weeks ago in Atlanta. The 6'9'' American survived a pair of three-set thrillers in intense heat to reach the final before falling to Mardy Fish in a third-set tiebreaker. Isner, ranked No. 19, is a stellar 27-16 for the season and has appeared in four finals, winning his first ATP title in Auckland.
De Bakker certainly has a chance of another upset based on his current form, but Isner is obviously in a much better spot against the underdog than he was at Wimbledon. The U.S. hard courts have always been most kind to Isner, and his serve does even more damage on this surface than it does on slick grass. Look for Isner to get revenge in two tight sets.
