Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic will make his 2010 Umag debut on Thursday in front of his countrymen.
Ivan Ljubicic vs. Ivan Dodig
Ivan Ljubicic’s first match in Umag will be against countryman Ivan Dodig. Ljubicic had a great start to the 2010 season, with his first ever Masters title coming in Indian Wells. Since then, however, the world No. 16 has had issues with his form. The Croat had a reasonably successful clay court season, with a third round showing at Roland Garros, but since that time, he has not won a single match.
Dodig has actually had a promising summer so far. The world No. 153 managed to qualify for Wimbledon and he won a match there before going down in a tight 4 set match to American Sam Querrey.
This won’t be the easiest win of his career, but Ljubicic should have enough to move into the quarterfinals.
Jurgen Melzer vs. Jan Hajek
World No. 15 Jurgen Melzer is currently playing some of the best tennis of his career. The Austrian went all the way to the semifinals at Roland Garros this year, before going down to eventual champion Rafael Nadal. Since the French Open, Melzer has made the quarterfinals in Stuttgart and the finals in Hamburg.
His opponent on Thursday is the Czech Republic’s Jan Hajek, whose most recent successes have come on the Challenger circuit. He won the event in Prostejov at the end of May. Hajek might make this match entertaining for a set, but Melzer is simply the better player. The Austrian in straight sets.
