Nikolay Davydenko will try to make strides in his comeback from a spring injury when he takes to the court in Umag on Wednesday.
Nikolay Davydenko vs. Stephane Robert
Russia’s top player Nikolay Davydenko is still trying to find his tennis footing after missing the entire spring clay swing due to injury. The Russian limped through the grass season, with 2 second round losses to show for his efforts on the lawns. He has not fared much better since he switched back to clay for the remainder of the European swing before the hard court season ramps up in North America. He made the third round in Hamburg, but he has yet to find the sort of form that got him to his current ranking of No. 6 in the world.
Stephane Robert is ranked 75 in the world. The Frenchman has had a disappointing season in 2010. A series of first and second round losses indicates that Davydenko should get through this match without much trouble.
Juan Carlos Ferrero vs. Pablo Cuevas
Spanish veteran Juan Carlos Ferrero has a 1-1 head-to-head with second round opponent Pablo Cuevas. The world No. 22 had an outstanding start to the year. Ferrero won 2 clay court titles during the South American clay court swing and made the final of a third. He had a disappointing showing at Roland Garros, where he lost in the third round, but he has picked up his level again since losing in the first round of Wimbledon.
Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas has not enjoyed anywhere near the level of success that Ferrero has enjoyed in 2010. Though he is most comfortable on clay, his results have been mediocre, with his best recent showing coming in Bastad, where he made the quarterfinals.
This match should be Ferrero’s for the taking.
