  • Chela, Dolgopolov kick off Studena Croatia Open

    7/26/10 4:09 AM | Cheryl Murray
Chela, Dolgopolov kick off Studena Croatia Open Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr and Juan Ignacio Chela headline a modest day in Umag as the European clay season finally comes to a close.

Juan Ignacio Chela vs. Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo

Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela will take on Spaniard Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo in the opening round in Umag. World No. 53 Chela holds a slim 2-1 winning record against Hidalgo, with the Argentine winning their last 2 meetings in 2009 and 2007, both on clay. Hidalgo is ranked 91 in the world. Most of his success comes on the Challenger circuit. The Spaniard just won the Pozoblanco Challenger event in early July. Chela is the stronger player; he should get through to the second round.

    Oleksandr Dolgopolov vs. Paolo Lorenzi

Oleksandr Dolgopolov has climbed the rankings and sits at No. 39 in the world. The Ukrainian had a good grass court season. He made the semifinals in Eastbourne and he made the main draw at Wimbledon, though he went out in the second round.

Dolgopolov has not had as much success on clay. Last week in Hamburg, he lost in the second round to Florian Mayer. He will take on Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi. The Italian spends most of his time on the Challenger circuit where he has had varying degrees of success. He is ranked 107 in the world.

Despite Dolgopolov’s preference for faster courts, the Ukrainian should move through to the second round.

pretty dolgo boy was so close to losing this one. it was a great finish. dolgo played serve and volley and many great drop shots. it was almost too playful, he got broken at 5-5 in the final. then broke back in the next game helped by a scorching forehand pass return. in total almost 50 winners. fun to watch!
