  • Ferrero, Simon highlight day 2 at German Open

    7/20/10 1:49 AM | Kelli DeMario
Ferrero, Simon highlight day 2 at German Open Fellow seeds Juan Carlos Ferrero and Gilles Simon are slated to open their 2010 International German Open campaigns against respective opponents Jan Hajek and Jarkko Nieminen. The players are vying for a round of 16 berth.

    (6) Juan Carlos Ferrero vs. Jan Hajek

Sixth seed Juan Carlos Ferrero leads second-round challenger Jan Hajek 2-0 heading into their clash on Tuesday. The players last met in 2007 at Wimbledon, where the Spaniard rallied from two sets down to secure a first-round victory.

Ferrero makes his return to competition after making the final four in Stuttgart last week (lost to Montanes). The 30-year-old veteran, appearing in his seventh Hamburg event, has built a 25-12 season record. The former World No. 1 will be looking for his third clay-court title in 2010, adding to previous successes at Costa Do Sauipe and Buenos Aires.

World No. 84 Jan Hajek make a successful Hamburg debut on Monday, overcoming Andreas Beck in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. With the opening-round win, the 26-year-old secured his 10th ATP World Tour victory of the season.

    Prediction: Ferrero in straight sets.

    (9) Gilles Simon vs. Jarkko Nieminen

Ninth seed Gilles Simon will attempt to break a 1-1 series tie with Jarkko Nieminen Tuesday afternoon. The players are meeting for the first time since splitting two hard-court contests in 2006.

The World No. 33 aims to rebound following his second-round exit to German Simon Greul in Stuttgart. Simon, continuing his comeback from a serious right knee injury, begins the International German Open with a modest 5-7 mark.

World No. 60 Jarkko Nieminen kicked off his 2010 Hamburg bid with a 6-3, 7-6(6) victory over qualifier Christophe Rochus. The 29-year-old, competing in his fifth German Open, aims to record back-to-back wins for the first time since Delray Beach.

    Prediction: Simon in three sets.
