  • Soderling faces Ferrer in Swedish Open semifinal

    7/16/10 8:33 PM | Kelli DeMario
Soderling faces Ferrer in Swedish Open semifinal Defending champion Robin Soderling is set to meet David Ferrer in the semifinal of the SkiStar Swedish Open on Saturday. The players will be contesting their ninth meeting on the ATP World Tour.

Top seed Robin Soderling holds a commanding 6-2 head-to-head series lead over third seed David Ferrer heading into their semifinal clash. The players last met this year at Wimbledon, where a round of 16 battle went to the Swede in five sets. The pair are level on clay at 2-2.

Soderling endured a challenging road to the final four, having fought through back-to-back three-set matches. The 25-year-old commenced his title defense with a 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-2 success over wildcard compatriot Andreas Vinciguerra. Soderling continued his run in the quarterfinal, rallying to victory against opponent Andreas Seppi, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(5).

The World No. 5 is bidding for his fourth championship berth in 2010, adding to previous runs in Rotterdam (champion), Barcelona and Roland Garros. Soderling, who makes his sixth semifinal appearance of the year, has built a 33-11 season record.

World No. 12 David Ferrer earned a semifinal berth without dropping a set, as he took out both Fabio Fognini and Pablo Cuevas in straight sets. The 2007 Swedish Open title-winner, through to his first semifinal since Madrid, will attempt to book his fourth ATP World Tour final spot of the season on Saturday.

Ferrer, entering into the semifinal with a 40-13 mark, has advanced to three clay-court finals in 2010: Acapulco (champion), Buenos Aires and Rome.

Ferrer starting strong here

Soderling not in good form this week

The Spanish boys are trying to make amends for DC.

Ferrer has lost it.

smr , 7/17/10 2:58 PM

I think Sod should be able to defend his title here, can't trust Robredo or Almagro to beat Sod, after Ferrer failed to do so. Ferrer has blister on his toe and I think he has the next tounament in mind, a 500 event at Hamburg next week.

luckystar , 7/17/10 3:32 PM

luckystar,
so you don't have confidence in Almagro, huh. Well, Nico has beat him before 2x in clay and the way he crushed Robredo today, I'll go for Almagro to win the Swedish Open tomorrow. I just hope that he will be able to translate his game in the hard courts as well, to have a better showing for the US Open series.

His game has improved markedly. I just hope and pray that he can do real damage in the upcoming hardcourt events. . After Nadal and Ferrer, Almagro is my favourite Spanish player.

lightforce , 7/17/10 5:19 PM

Sigh. lightforce, yes I do not have faith in Almagro. Do you know how many times he came so close to beating his opponents and ended up losing? A few times against Tsonga, and also his disappointing performances at the DC ties. Why must he do so well against Rafa, esp in Madrid that cause us quite a scare, but against others while leading, he can end up losing?

Anyway, whether it is Sod winning or Almagro winning tomorrow, its OK with me, as I have nothing against Sod. I just hope that both of them play a good match. Sod wasn't impressive this tournament and if Almagro can play consistently well (for once), then I think Almagro can win. Fingers crossed though.

luckystar , 7/17/10 6:10 PM

Would like to see Almagro break through and win one of these tournaments. Like Berdych, Nico's game has improved considerably this year. If he can beat Verdasco then he can beat Sod.

Maya , 7/18/10 6:23 AM

Here's hoping Amalgro wins cos Sod is threatening to pass my Andy on the inside lane!

deuce , 7/18/10 11:39 AM

well deuce, that is pretty lame. besides there are many more tournies coming up where murray has heaps to defend and söderling nothing...

croc , 7/18/10 12:36 PM

croc: for goodness sake, don't rub salt in the wound. Poor Deuce is suffering quite enough already without you reminding her of what is to come :)

ed251137 , 7/18/10 12:51 PM

croc:a) remark was tongue in cheek
b) Andy got a wrist injury last August so in fact is not defending much, title Canada, semis somewhere and a poor showing USOpen, then nothing till Valencia so he can well pick up loads of points.
ed: am not worried at all about Andy, all I hope is he stays injury free for rest of the year. The boy's starting to look like the old, confident Andy.
What I am really hoping is that the ranking for USOpen will be Andy 3 and Fed 4 so Fed and Rafa may play in the semis, if they get that far, and whoever is on the other side doesn't have to beat them both to get to the final.

deuce , 7/18/10 4:01 PM

Yes!

deuce , 7/18/10 4:17 PM

hehe...nico wins...VAMOS!!

vrael , 7/18/10 4:20 PM

Nico wins, BUT deuce, at the USopen, there's a possibility that Roger may slip further to No. 5 or 6 because he is defending a lot points, so the posibility that I am talking about is, Rafa Murray and Roger may fall on the same half at the USOpen and Murray might meet Roger at the QF haha. Then, if he will survive the QF, AndyM will deal with Rafa (granting that there will be no major upset) hahaha.

Raindrops , 7/18/10 4:41 PM

I think it is more likely that Murray slip to no.5 than Fed to no.5, as Sod is not far behind Murray and Sod has basically no points to defend at Canada and Cincy. There is a possibility of Rafa/Nole/Fed meeting Murray in the QF, just like what happened to Rafa/Murray at the AO.

luckystar , 7/18/10 4:53 PM

raindrops: we'll see :)
luckystar: bloody hell, just one of 'em please will do! You've made it sound as if he's gotta beat them all........

deuce , 7/18/10 5:11 PM

deuce, its not Murray beating them all, but rather he giving anyone of them problem, just like what he did to Rafa at AO this year. I'm sure the three of them would not like to meet Murray at the QF stage, they'll be hoping that Murray will end up in Sod's quarter, if Sod becomes no.4 by then.

luckystar , 7/18/10 8:26 PM

I do think Murray may be overtaken by Sod for the number four position. However, the good news is that Murray doesn't have a lot of points to defend at the USO. He was knocked out last year in the fourth round by Cilic. The other good news, as deuce pointed out, is that Murray is now looking much more like his old self. That is good news for his fans! Hard court is Murray's best surface, so this is his time to make up some ground.

I don't pretend to know how the seedings will go, but Fed has the most to lose right now in the hard court season. He has 1000 points to defend at Cincy and then 1200 points for being in the final at the USO. If for some reason, he is unable to defend these points, then he may well drop even lower.

I can't even imagine what it would be like if Rafa, Fed and Murray are all in the same half of the draw. Yikes!

Nativenewyorker , 7/18/10 9:08 PM

I don't think Federer is any where close to moving below 3, Murray will have to win Cincy and defend Toronto to overtake Federer, and that is if Federer loses all his points, and Soderling will have to win the two titles to overtake Federer. I don't think this is likely.

I did a projection of the points, but I'm not hopeful that it will come out in a readable format on TT, so if it comes out as gibberish, ignore it.

nadline , 7/18/10 9:53 PM

nadline,

Although it's a bit hard to read, a few things do stand out. It appears that Murray is in real danger of losing the #4 ranking to Sod. I can see that Fed should hold onto the #3 ranking. However, if he does get knocked out early at the USO, then that could open the door for Sod or Murray.

It looks so complicated, but things could get very interesting. What I like best are the point projections for Rafa! Our guy is in great shape!

Nativenewyorker , 7/18/10 10:19 PM

The Nos 2, 3, 4, and 5 rankings are all very close and only a few hundred points separates them. Fed is just 20 points behind the Joker, so he could overtake him at some point because the Joker has a lot of points to defend, especially after the USO. If Fed does not defend his points prior to and at the USO, then the Joker would be pretty safe for the SO as the No. 2 seed.. However, after the USO, the Joker has a lot of points to defend and Fed could reclaim the No. 2 spot.

As I pointed out on another forum, Soderling could overtake Murray, but now that Soderling has lost, Murray is stll OK at his No. 4 spot, buthanging on by a couple of hundred points. The only player that's sitting pretty at this time until the end of the year, is Nadal. For the other top 5, there could be a lot of reshuffling, and it would be interesting to see how it all unfolds at the end of the year.

Roddick could move up again, as he has very little to defend, only SF in Toronto, nothing at Cincy, 3rd round at the USO, and nothing much at Shaghai, where he got injured; after that injury Roddick didn't play, so all things considered Andy could also pick up a lot of points if he plays in those tournaments that are scheduled for the latter part of 2010.

As I mentioned last year, and it's coming to pass, the Top 5 will be a revolving door which will make the other half of the top 10 to revolve even more.

Von , 7/19/10 2:22 AM

I don't think Fed will lose sleep for being no.3 now, as he knows there are opportunities for him to overtake Nole later on during the year. I believe Nole recognizes that too, which may explain why he is playing some 250 events during the coming hard court season. If he wins these 250 events, he'll add points to his tally, as he can replace his points at Queens (20 points) and at Serbia Open (45 points) with these events, and pull further ahead of Fed.

luckystar , 7/19/10 10:53 AM

What a difference a year makes, who would have thought last year this time that Rafa would be so far ahead of the rest. Perhaps we should all learn from this experience, and not get too down when our favourite player is going a bad patch, because it could all change so quickly. This is how it used to be until first Federer then Nadal came along and had a stranglehold on the top 2 spots for x number of years and I don't think the Fedal era is over yet.

Until there are some credible contenders for the top 2 spots, I hope Fedal goes on reigning, because it does a world of good for the sport.
