Fernando Verdasco joins defending champion Robin Soderling in quarterfinal-round action at the SkiStar Swedish Open on Friday. The seeds are looking to book a place among the Bastad final four.
(1) Robin Soderling vs. Andreas Seppi
Top seed Robin Soderling holds a 2-0 series edge against opponent Andreas Seppi heading into their quarterfinal clash. The players met at the 2009 Stockholm event, where a round of 16 match went to the Swede in straight sets. Seppi has yet to win a set from the defending champion through two contests.
Soderling began his title defense with a tricky three-set encounter against fellow Swede Andreas Vinciguerra. The 25-year-old dropped the second set, but held on to win in three, 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-2 in one hour and 52 minutes. Soderling is bidding for his sixth ATP World Tour semifinal berth of the season, adding to previous successes in Rotterdam (winner), Indian Wells, Miami, Barcelona (finalist) and Roland Garros (finalist).
World No. 76 Andreas Seppi commenced the SkiStar Swedish Open with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Marcel Granollers, then followed with a hard-fought victory against fellow Italian Potito Starace, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(7). The 26-year-old will attempt to secure his first semifinal spot in 2010.
(2) Fernando Verdasco vs. (5) Tommy Robredo
Second seed Fernando Verdasco is set to square off against fifth-seeded compatriot Tommy Robredo for the ninth time on Friday. The players are level at 4-4, with Robredo carrying a 2-0 advantage on clay. Verdasco has captured three of the last four matches, dating back to a 2005 battle at Wimbledon.
The world No. 10 reached his third consecutive Bastad quarter after downing Stephane Robert in 67 minutes, 6-1, 6-1. Verdasco, aiming for his first semifinal appearance since May, remains on track to record his 35th ATP World Tour victory of the season.
Two-time Bastad title-winner Robredo made the quarterfinal with successes against Michal Przysiezny and Andrey Golubev. The world No. 36 looks to earn passage into his first semifinal since the 2009 Swedish Open.

Verdasco lost. I don't understand why he is playing so much tennis. He should be resting now and prepare for the US hard court swing.
Sod is one set down. It seems that other than RG and maybe Barcelona, Sod couldn't do well on other clay surfaces. Looks like it is tough for Sod to defend his title here.
