  • Davydenko, Monfils begin at Mercedes Cup

    7/15/10 5:05 AM | Ricky Dimon
Davydenko, Monfils begin at Mercedes Cup Nikolay Davydenko and Gael Monfils will be in action for the first time at this week's Stuttgart event on Thursday. Davydenko is going up against Daniel Gimeno-Traver and Monfils is set to take on Pablo Andujar.

    (1) Nikolay Davydenko vs. Daniel Gimeno-Traver

Following a first-round bye, Davydenko will be kicking off his 2010 Mercedes Cup campaign on Thursday against Gimeno-Traver. The two players have faced each other once before, with Davydenko easing to a 6-2, 6-2 victory in last year's Umag opening round. This season has not been as kind to Davydenko due to a broken wrist, but he recently won a critical Davis Cup rubber for Russia and appears to be at or near 100 percent.

Gimeno-Traver earned his spot in the Stuttgart second round thanks to an impressive 7-5, 6-7(6), 6-3 win over Jeremy Chardy. The 88th-ranked Spaniard, however, is just 8-17 at the ATP level this year. Gimeno-Traver is a solid clay-courter, but he is going up against an opponent who is more than capable on the slow stuff. Look for Davydenko to cruise in straight sets.

    (3) Gael Monfils vs. (Q) Pablo Andujar

Monfils and Andujar will be meeting for the first time in their careers when they do battle in the Mercedes Cup first round on Thursday. Andujar is already enjoying one of his best weeks as a professional, as he qualified for the main draw and then dismissed fellow qualifier Bastian Knittel in three sets. The 24-year-old Spaniard, ranked 125th in the world, went into to Stuttgart with nine career ATP wins (two this season).

Although he is heavily-favored in this matchup and one of the main threats to win the Stuttgart title, Monfils is only in mediocre form. The Frenchman is 20-11 this season and registers at No. 17 in the world. He lost early at both the French Open and Wimbledon, but he won a huge Davis Cup rubber over David Ferrer in five sets last weekend. Andujar is at his best on clay, but Monfils should have more than enough to win this in straights.
