    7/15/10 12:33 AM | Kelli DeMario
Bastad - Verdasco, Almagro highlight play on Thursday Fernando Verdasco and Nicolas Almagro are set to close second-round action at the SkiStar Swedish Open Thursday afternoon. The seeds will square off against respective opponents Stephane Robert and Jarkko Nieminen.

    (2) Fernando Verdasco vs. Stephane Robert

Second seed Fernando Verdasco kicks off his 2010 Bastad bid Thursday afternoon, ready for a first-time meeting with Stephane Robert. The World No. 10 enters into his fifth Swedish Open with a 33-12 season record. The 26-year-old makes his return to competition following Spain’s 0-5 Davis Cup drubbing against France. Verdasco, twice a title-winner in 2010 (San Jose and Barcelona), looks to capture his first win since late May.

World No. 77 Stephane Robert secured his 10th Tour-level victory on Tuesday, as he defeated fellow Frenchman Jonathan Dasnieres De Veig in straight sets. The 30-year-old veteran is competing in his SkiStar Swedish Open debut.

    (4) Nicolas Almagro vs. Jarkko Nieminen

Fourth seed Nicolas Almagro is tied 1-1 lifetime with second-round opponent Jarkko Nieminen. The players are meeting for the first time since the 2007 Masters Series Cincinnati, where a round of 16 clash went to the Spaniard in straight sets. Nieminen has a 1-0 edge on clay, having rallied to win a three-set encounter at the 2005 tournament in Sopot.

The World No. 20 is bidding for his 30th ATP World Tour victory of the year on Wednesday. Almagro advanced to the 2007 Swedish Open final, where he finished runner-up to countryman David Ferrer. The 24-year-old has made the quarterfinal or better in four clay-court events this season.

World No. 63 Jarkko Nieminen commenced his seventh Swedish Open with a come-from-behind success against hometown wildcard Christian Lindell. The 2006 Bastad semifinalist has compiled an 11-15 mark in 2010.
