    7/14/10 2:26 AM | Kelli DeMario
Bastad - Soderling kicks off title defense against Vinciguerra World No. 5 Robin Soderling is set to commence his Swedish Open title defense against fellow Swede Andreas Vinciguerra late Wednesday. Third seed David Ferrer is also in action, as he takes on Fabio Fognini.

    (1) Robin Soderling vs. (WC) Andreas Vinciguerra

Top seed Robin Soderling holds a 1-0 head-to-head series lead over opening-round opponent Andreas Vinciguerra. The fellow Swedes met last year in Bastad, where a semifinal clash went to Soderling in straight sets.

The 25-year-old enters into the SkiStar Swedish Open with a 31-11 record, bolstered by a title-winning run in Rotterdam. The Swede has two clay-court final appearances to his credit as well, having finished runner-up in Barcelona and the French Open. Soderling will be making his return to competition on Wednesday, following his run to the quarterfinal at Wimbledon.

World No. 347 Vinciguerra began the tournament with a 7-6(6), 6-7(5), 6-4 victory over Daniel Brands of Germany. The two-time Bastad finalist is 1-2 for the 2010 season.

    (3) David Ferrer vs. Fabio Fognini

Third seed David Ferrer leads Fabio Fognini 1-0 heading into their second-round battle, having earned a lone victory at Wimbledon in 2009.

The World No. 12 has compiled a 38-13 record this season, aided by strong showings during multiple clay-court events. Ferrer took home the title in Acapulco and finished runner-up in Buenos Aires and Rome. The 28-year-old, who secured the Bastad crown in 2007, makes his way back to action after Spain’s disappointing 0-5 loss to France in Davis Cup.

World No. 86 Fognini rallied to defeat wild card Filip Prpic of Sweden in the first round, 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-4. The 23-year-old Italian, competing in his second SkiStar Swedish Open, is bidding for his 12th victory of the year on Wednesday.
