Fellow seeds Olivier Rochus and Mardy Fish are set to battle for the title at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Championships on Sunday. The pair will be contesting their third career-meeting.
World No. 65 Olivier Rochus looks to break a 1-1 head-to-head series tie with World No. 79 Mardy Fish Sunday afternoon. The players last met at the 2007 tournament in Lyon, where a hard-fought round of 16 clash went to the Belgian in three tie-break sets. Fish earned his victory over Rochus in 2002, when he captured a three-set match in Long Island. The pair will be meeting for the first time on grass.
Rochus reached the Newport final without surrendering a set, having taken down opponents Edouard Roger-Vasselin, Sergei Bubka, Raven Klaasen and Brian Dabul all in straights. The 29-year-old Belgian, entering into the championship match with a 12-16 season mark, is slated to make his eighth appearance in an ATP World Tour final. Rochus aims to secure his first title since his 2006 success in Munich.
Fish overcame a difficult battle in the quarterfinal, where he rallied to knock out Frank Dancevic in three sets, 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-4. Prior to the struggle on Friday, the American recorded straight-set victories over compatriot Michael Russell and Somdev Devvarman. Fish finished the semifinal in two sets as well, having bested qualifier Richard Bloomfield, 7-6(5), 6-4.
The 28-year-old is through to his second ATP World Tour final in 2010, adding to a previous runner-up finish at Queen’s Club (lost to Querrey). Fish, three-times a Tour title-winner, will be making his 15th career appearance in a championship final.
