Victor Hanescu and Marco Chiudinelli will look for a place in the Stuttgart second round on Monday. Mischa Zverev and Sergiy Stakhovsky are also on the Day 1 schedule at one of the season's last clay-court tournaments.
Marco Chiudinelli vs. (8) Victor Hanescu
Hanescu will be the only seeded player in action on Monday at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart. He is set for a first-round meeting with Chiudinelli and this will be their first career encounter at the ATP level. They have faced each other once before, six years ago at a hard-court Challenger event (Hanescu prevailed 6-4, 6-4).
The edge in terms of surface and current form goes to Hanescu, who stands at 6'6'' but actually does his best work on the slow stuff. The Romanian is a solid 19-13 for his 2010 campaign while Chiudinelli registers at a disappointing 7-18. Chiudinelli would much prefer to play this match on a hard court, so look for Hanescu to dismiss the Swiss in straight sets.
(WC) Mischa Zverev vs. Sergiy Stakhovsky
Zverev and Stakhovsky will be squaring off for the second time in their careers at the ATP level when they do battle in the Stuttgart first round on Monday. Earlier this year in the Barcelona first round, Stakhovsky got the best of Zverev 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. They also went head-to-head three years ago at a hard-court Challenger tournament, with Zverev coming out on top 6-2, 6-4.
Despite those results, Stakhovsky does his best work on faster surfaces. The Ukrainian recently captured an ATP title on the grass courts of Eastbourne and he is ranked No. 46 in the world (as of Sunday). Zverev, on the other hand, is toiling down at 154th in the rankings and obviously needed a wild card to get into the main draw. The German will have the crowd behind him, but Stakhovsky in three sets is the pick.
