  • Soderling, Ferrer square off in Wimbledon fourth round

    6/27/10 9:20 PM | Ricky Dimon
Soderling, Ferrer square off in Wimbledon fourth round Robin Soderling and David Ferrer will do battle at Wimbledon on Monday. A spot in the quarterfinals is at stake.

Robin Soderling and David Ferrer will be going head-to-head for the eighth time in their careers when they clash in the Wimbledon fourth round on Monday. Soderling has won five of seven meetings, including one on grass in 2004 and their most recent encounter at last year's French Open (in a fourth-set tiebreaker).

On grass, Soderling is a huge favorite to extended his series lead over Ferrer. The sixth-ranked Swede reached the fourth round last year before falling to Roger Federer in three tight sets and he has been destroying people so far at this event. Soderling has not dropped a set in drubbings of Robby Ginepri, Marcel Granollers, and Thomaz Bellucci.

Ferrer's game is not as conducive to grass because has little power and relies on his return of serve, for which he does not have as much time on a fast surface. This is the 11th-ranked Spaniard's second triple to the Wimbledon fourth round in eight tries, but it almost did not happen. Ferrer, after blowing a two-set lead, battled back from a break down in the fifth to outlast Jeremy Chardy on Saturday.

Surface aside, Soderling is simply in outstanding form. He is 30-10 for his 2010 campaign and is coming off another runner-up performance at the French Open. There is no reason to think Ferrer will end Soderling's hot streak, and on grass it should not be particularly close.

This one could be the MOST one-sided match in the Round of 16 lineup (other than Roddick-Lu perhaps). Soderling will crush Ferrer. The Swede is just a terrible matchup for the Spaniard. I would be surprised if Ferrer came close to winning a set, much less the match.

Vamos Ferru (Iron Man).
I hope you do well.

mara002 , 6/28/10 3:16 AM

Ferrer is a fighter and Robin is in great form, but still he is not as consistent as the top two players yet.
David has enough game to give Robin some trouble. It may be against the general opinion, but I think Ferru could give the big surprise and upset the Swede

grafight , 6/28/10 6:42 AM

Very interested in how Ferrer gets on cos he's very like Andy in that he chases everything down.

deuce , 6/28/10 8:05 AM

VAMOS DAVID!!!

vrael , 6/28/10 10:01 AM

VAMOS! David...go play your best . Don't give up the fight.

rafanna , 6/28/10 10:42 AM

ferrer has little or no chance in this match. Why? Well, ferrer may be one of the best defenders in the mens game, but even he cant chase down the soderling forehand consistently when its firing of all cylinders.(which it certainly is now) Ferrers return may be good, but the slicker grass court surface will still give soderling a lot of free points-regardless of what ferrer does. Also,Ferrer's serve isnt the best and Soderling will be all over it. To further compound Ferrer's problem, soderling hits his shots harder and heavier than he does; and even if he is able to play some good defence, the cumulative effect of being forced to run everything down will wear him down. Expect Soderlings winner tally to be a bit lower than his previous matches, but expect Ferrer to hit a lot of FORCED erros as soderlings harder shots will give him little time to set up,and he will be forced to swing at the ball harder than he would like just to stay competetive with soderling in the rallies-and the harder you swing, the greater the chance at making erros. The only way ferrer can win is if soderling serve, forehand and backhand are completely misfiring.

Ricky couldn't possibly have known about the Wimbledon weather when he predicted that Sod would get to the semis but here in the UK we are having an amazing streak of hot. dry weather. The courts are playing mighty fast and the ball bouncing mighty low. This, as we know, has favoured the big servers like Sod and one serve break costs the set.. This is why this match will be so interesting because Ferrer plays similar to Andy and Rafa. Of course that said, he hasn't got Rafa's forehand or Andy's serve. Whoever plays Sod is going to have to come up with a heck of a game plan! Slice that ball mean and low to his backhand, I'd guess.
Weather not forecast to break till Saturday folks and please never another comment about British weather!
BTW clayking: England can play cricket at least!

deuce , 6/28/10 1:11 PM

@deuce
You are right about the weather-its making the court dry. Since the court is so dry (which is remarkable for Wimbledon) the ball is not only flying through the court its also staying extremely low. It?s as fast as an indoor carpet right now. Which helps the Soderling Serves and groundstrokes enormously. It?s almost impossible to break serve. Nadal?s match with Petzschner tells the whole story about the court: he dropped his serve 1 single time and yet had to play 5 Sets. Federer?s stats against Bozoljac are almost sick: he was +56 Winners-to-Errors. In fact Federer had only 13 Unforced Errors in the match (which is ridiculously good), yet he still dropped a set and was two points away from having to play a 5th again. For anyone whoever complained that Wimbledon has been ?slowed down? can rest easy. It?s as fast this year as it ever was.

tj600 , 6/28/10 1:28 PM

guys i agree abt the ball flying through the courts but are u sure abt the low bounce? i mean in these conditions top spun shots shud rise a bit higher in comaprision to damp conditions.

vamosrafa , 6/28/10 1:56 PM

@vamos
good point. Im not really sure-i guess it is bouncing a bit higher as the balls are heavier.

tj600 , 6/28/10 1:59 PM

soderling off to a flyer again!!

vrael , 6/28/10 5:03 PM

ferrer had chances to break-but the swedes big serve comes to his aid again.

tj600 , 6/28/10 5:12 PM

Soderling has begun his crushing of Ferrer towards the QF. imo, he is the 3rd contester for the title, after Federer and Roddick

bjawad , 6/28/10 5:18 PM

@tj, i remember rafa saying he prefers sunny conditions because his forehand gets mroe kick in such conditions !

soderling having to save break pt again, serve coming to the rescue again.

vamosrafa , 6/28/10 5:33 PM

Well, there's my answer, Ferrer's being overpowered and has no answe at the mo.

deuce , 6/28/10 5:34 PM

ferrer breaks-but it took one bad line call to wreck sods concentration. But he will win,as ferrers serve isnt the best.

tj600 , 6/28/10 5:39 PM

Hey!!

Ferrer breaks!!!!!!!!!!!..................hopes he wins second set!!!!!!!!!!!

Monalysa , 6/28/10 6:04 PM

u ppl are overrating soderling ! its really strange how ppl think he is goan overpower rafa and then murray ! sorry but what has soderling doen so impressive?? playing clay courters and destroying them is not very impressive and look as i said ferrer will test him and he is abt to wi a set and goes does 7-5 !! what do u have to say now?? first test and he loses a set...and rafa is 2 times better than ferrer from the ground and and he was for the favorite for me over soderling and still is !!!

@bjawad, haha, no matter what rafa does ur hatred will never allow you to hail rafa as a favortie !keep dreaming , nadal wil beat soderling again.

vamosrafa , 6/28/10 6:11 PM

whenever ferrer has soderling on the move, he has been able to draw an error more often than not , rafa also has a good sliced bakhand which he can use to good effect.besides, rafa also serves better than ferrer.

vamosrafa , 6/28/10 6:14 PM

I like Soderling simply because of his attitude, fearless... be it Fed or Nadal or whomever on the other side of the net. Sod fears no one, that is what makes him impressive and dangerous for me, besides his overwhelming power when used within or on the lines.

Sanela , 6/28/10 6:14 PM

@vamos
actually this isnt surprising. ferrer has a better return of serve than nadal or even federer(its just that his serve sucks) But soderling is still owing, and look at all the top players-they havent had it their own way either.(including nadal and federer)

tj600 , 6/28/10 6:46 PM

tj600..........EVERYONE wants that 1,000,000 pounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!........EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!

Exciting stuff today...................those matches are awesome!!!!!

Roddick is two sets down!!! I hope he wins coz I have booked him in the final with Rafa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.............lol!!!!

Monalysa , 6/28/10 6:58 PM

good to see ferrer playing well......opening the eyes of some ppl here!!

vrael , 6/28/10 7:00 PM

well, always nice to see ferrer doing well..
sad his best friend cannot learn from him!! :-(
however really, Sod should have won in straights..
but now, ferrer in with a real chance!!

clayking , 6/28/10 7:04 PM

tj, ferrer has a slightly better return but dont u think nadal has 10 more qualities? namely MUCH BETTER forehand, better backhnad in all regards, better defence, better offence, MUCH GREATER MENTAL RESOLVE and even stronger physically, even nadal is better at the net and can play good volleys, and the SERVE , rafa's serve is much more effective on grass. so 1 quality vs 10 uidecide urself !

btw sorry for lleyton's loss tj, a tough one. and ferrer serving at 4-3 15-0, 5th set coming and ferrer's record in 5 sets is outstanding.

vamosrafa , 6/28/10 7:04 PM

Good stuff..........good stuff.........i hope Rafa can come out and top it all off with a straight sets win!!!!!!!!

VAMOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Monalysa , 6/28/10 7:07 PM

soderling struggling against ferrer atm....a 90% nadal might beat him.....VAMOS!!!

vrael , 6/28/10 7:08 PM

vrael..
that will be if, sodacan reaches QF..

clayking , 6/28/10 7:09 PM

Wow Nole beats Hewitt in four sets, despite feeling unwell, that's impressive! Well done Nole!

What happen to Roddick? Now playing catch up with Lu; Lu is certainly playing well, I think, as I can't view that match. Roddick really must up his level to win.

Ferrer is playing well to break Sod's serves and take the second set, hope he can win the fourth and push the Sod to a fifth set. Ferrer then may have a chance to win the match. Vamos David!

Well, at least one of my favorites to reach the final - Berdych - has reached the QF and will have a face off with Fed. That match should be interesting and hope he really can play well and push Fed to the limit. Come on Berdych!!

luckystar , 6/28/10 7:09 PM

@clayking...yes ofcourse.

ferrer wins the 2nd...he will serve first in the decider....VAMOS FERRER!!!

vrael , 6/28/10 7:10 PM

#wins the 4th

vrael , 6/28/10 7:11 PM

Yeah....this is a shocker!!!!!!!!!!........the danger here for Sod is that he did not have anyone to push him early like Fed and Rafa!!!.......so NOW he is struggling!!!

That is exactly what NNY has always argued!!! Good for Ferrer!!!!..............that would be a great win for him, not sure if he has ever reached QF @ Wimby!!!!

VAMOS!!!!

Monalysa , 6/28/10 7:13 PM

I was talking abt it yesterday and I am saying it again , ferrer has the 2dn best record in the 5th sets..he has won arnd 77% of all of his 5 set matches so that doesnt go well for soderling who has a poor one.

vamosrafa , 6/28/10 7:14 PM

ferrer holds.....VAMOS!!

vrael , 6/28/10 7:14 PM

@mona,
his best showing at wimby is round 4 now..

clayking , 6/28/10 7:15 PM

Come on Ferrer!!!
