  • Federer headlines second-round action on Wednesday

    6/23/10 2:15 AM | Kelli DeMario
Federer headlines second-round action on Wednesday After surviving a scare in the opening round, defending champion Roger Federer will be looking for an easier outing in round two. The World No. 2 is set to take the court against qualifier Ilija Bozoljac late Wednesday.

Top seed Roger Federer aims to regroup Wednesday afternoon, after fighting his way out of serious trouble during an opening-round clash with Alejandro Falla. The 16-time Grand Slam champion was forced to rally from two sets and a break down, but came through in five, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(1), 6-0.

With the first-round clash, Federer improved his 2010 season mark to 28-8. The 28-year-old Swiss remains on course to pocket a record-tying seventh Wimbledon title.

World No. 152 Ilija Bozoljac won his first ATP World Tour-level match of the season on Monday, as he downed Chilean veteran Nicolas Massu in four sets. The Serbian qualifier fired 27 aces and 82 winners en route to a 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(7) victory.

Prior to his success on Monday, the 24-year-old had not won a round at Wimbledon since 2008, when he rallied to defeat Australian Chris Guccione in four sets.

Prediction: A settled Federer for the win in straight sets.

Ilija Bozoljac is the guy who used to hit first serves around 150 miles/h (fastest clocked at 153 m/h).

27 aces and 82 winners?! pretty damn awesome for a qualifier!

mriiidula , 6/23/10 8:04 AM

Yes... Ilija can play some serious game... but he 's not consistent... and Fed... old fox, with experience will just criuse in strait...

zare , 6/23/10 8:16 AM

Cmon Roger! No more heart-attacks please!

Max , 6/23/10 12:09 PM

@rfzr, u remember exaktly when did he hit that serve?

vamosrafa , 6/23/10 12:32 PM

153 mph serve.. must be in challengers or davis cup..

clayking , 6/23/10 2:15 PM

One of the commentators has just said that after three days of continuous sunshine the court is playing much faster than on Monday. If he can handle Andy R's service speed Bozo's shouldn't be a threat

ed251137 , 6/23/10 2:21 PM

Bozoljac should play match of his life... to get one set maybe... which I seriously doubt...
But qualifiers can be very unpleasant opponent... he has already 5 victories on WB...
Again... I still think it will be match without heartbreaks...

zare , 6/23/10 2:39 PM

Today we need to see how federer plays. This match may silent critics or he will receive more harsh words.

We will have to see if Fed plays according to some plan or just play his natural game.

champ00289 , 6/23/10 2:49 PM

zare,

But I think today it would be a different experience for Bozoljac as he will get a chance to play in court 1. and the atmospher would be differnt.

champ00289 , 6/23/10 2:56 PM

Federer doesn't usually have trouble with players of Bozoljac's ilk - then again, this isn't Federer as we've known him.

I actually think this could be interesting for a set and a half.

cherylmurray , 6/23/10 3:15 PM

TBH i havent seen much of bozo but look how well petzchner did against fed, he was dominant on his serve and put all sorts of pressure so if bozo can play well on his serve and create some drama on the fed serve we may get some entertainment. but fed in 3 is the safest call imo.

vamosrafa , 6/23/10 3:26 PM

davis cup uk - serbia 2006, rusedsky-murray vs zimonjic-bozoljac.

rfzr , 6/23/10 3:46 PM

thnx fellow :)

vamosrafa , 6/23/10 4:30 PM

why is it that two of the fastest serves ever have been hit in davis cup matches?! LOL..roddick and bozoljac

vamosrafa , 6/23/10 4:45 PM

is anyone watching the score between mahut and isner ?

It is 18-18.

champ00289 , 6/23/10 5:04 PM

it's now 20-21 with no end in sight

phoenix , 6/23/10 5:23 PM

they have made the world record right??

vamosrafa , 6/23/10 5:32 PM

i wonder if this guy had a better ball toss, his serve would have been a KILLER if he had a better ball toss...even i have a better ball toss than this ! lol

vamosrafa , 6/23/10 6:04 PM

How is Federer playing ?????

champ00289 , 6/23/10 6:17 PM

@champ
hes playing quite well. or at least better than he did in R1.

tj600 , 6/23/10 6:25 PM

30-30 now. lololololol

cherylmurray , 6/23/10 6:31 PM

hope the spectators brought their sleeping bags and toothbrushes with them.

homos , 6/23/10 6:37 PM

i was busy watching another match..
just thought of taking a look at the scoreline here..
and it is amazingly 1 set all!!

clayking , 6/23/10 6:58 PM

...and Ilijy took first set agains Roge...!!!! 1:1...
ajde ilijaaaaaaaaa

zare , 6/23/10 6:59 PM

No its not!!!

Like i said before, my prediction is a Rafa/Roddick final!! Even if Fed wins this game he seems WAY TOO vulnerable for my liking!

VAMOS!!!

Monalysa , 6/23/10 6:59 PM

careless from federer!!!

vrael , 6/23/10 7:01 PM

Ilia Bozoljac is serving really well.He hold lots of game at 40-0 or 40-15 in second set.

Federer hit 3 aces in a row on his serve in the tie breaker but missed one point which caused him the set(Ilia Bozoljac returned the serve well).

champ00289 , 6/23/10 7:02 PM

ilia can do so much more with his serve...needs to concentrate more on the ball toss...

vrael , 6/23/10 7:03 PM

zare,

Novak is at 5-5.

champ00289 , 6/23/10 7:05 PM

servefest going on~~

Max , 6/23/10 7:06 PM

max,
do you mean this match??

clayking , 6/23/10 7:09 PM

Actually this fellow Bozoliac is so unorthodox, that he is perplexing every body, including Roger. His serve is totally different and he is playing double fisted forehand, and also single fisted forehand. When you normally expect a top spin or flat return, the guy is giving you a slice on forehand. He will not win, but he has already won a number of hearts. Federer has now broken him,and I expect him to win. I actually think he is playing better than he did in the falla match.(altho he is still a bit below par)

tj600 , 6/23/10 7:13 PM

off topic....those of you who are complaining straight sets win, tune in to Isner/Mahut match they have already flunk outside the earth orbit and now at they are in Saturn I believe still dueling who's the King of Universe. 35-35 Isner to serve.

Raindrops , 6/23/10 7:13 PM

Yes clayking, Bozoliac is tossing somewhere and hitting aces. Fed is also firing aces.

Max , 6/23/10 7:20 PM

well max,
in comparsion to a match i'm watching..
this is just nothing!!

clayking , 6/23/10 7:24 PM

fed up 2-1

tj600 , 6/23/10 7:32 PM

Are you KIDDING me? WHAT is Federer doing?

cherylmurray , 6/23/10 8:08 PM

federer is playing well...but that guy is monster...especially his service...AWWWWWW!!!!!

kingnadal , 6/23/10 8:10 PM

...tie break...
AJDE ILIJA....GIVE US THE FIFTH SET!!!!!

zare , 6/23/10 8:15 PM

kingnadal - Federer is letting this guy look good. he isn't rushing him or anything.

cherylmurray , 6/23/10 8:20 PM

cheryl, the guy is good and handsome ;)

rfzr , 6/23/10 8:25 PM

Cherylmurray,

R u kidding...hahahah!!! No wayyy..both played very well...:)

kingnadal , 6/23/10 8:25 PM

got to love ilijia.....great character

vrael , 6/23/10 8:26 PM

WELL.... Ilija went out from court no1 with standing ovations... 3:1 for Fed but Ilija was phenomenal...

zare , 6/23/10 8:26 PM

the guy is amazing! his serves r too good. nice roger got through. Cmon roger !

Max , 6/23/10 8:27 PM

Fed played better in this match than his match against Falla, however he was still not in top form. In the end Fed's experience and his serves led him through the match. This llija guy is still inexperienced and he can't capitalize on some opportunities offered to him by Fed. So in the end, Fed does not have an easy draw, or may be he makes the draw difficult for himself. I believe a top form Fed would have an easier time with both Falla and this llija guy.

This llija guy reminds me of Dolgopolov, another up and coming youngster, who also plays very differently from most players. We may be able to see him in action against Tsonga tomorrow.
