Fernando Verdasco and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are set to kick off their 2010 Wimbledon campaigns on Tuesday, as they square off against respective opponents Fabio Fognini and Robert Kendrick.
(8) Fernando Verdasco vs. Fabio Fognini
World No. 9 Fernando Verdasco holds a 2-0 head-to-head series edge over first-round opponent Fabio Fognini. The pair last met during this season’s South American clay-court swing, where a first-round, three-set clash went the Spaniard’s way in Acapulco. Tuesday afternoon signals their first encounter on grass.
Verdasco has built a solid 33-10 season record behind title-winning runs in San Jose and Barcelona. The 26-year-old is set to see action for the first time since his round of 16 loss to countryman Nicolas Almagro at the French Open. Verdasco reached the Wimbledon round of 16 in 2006, 2008 and 2009.
World No. 80 Fabio Fognini returns to grass-court competition after a round of 16 finish in Eastbourne. The 23-year-old Italian, competing in his second tournament at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, is 8-16 for the year.
Prediction: Verdasco in straight sets.
(10) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. (Q) Robert Kendrick
Tenth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be looking to record his second career-victory over qualifier Robert Kendrick on Tuesday. The Frenchman won their only previous meeting in 2009, when he posted a second-round, straight-set success at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Miami.
Tsonga heads into Wimbledon with a 22-11 mark for the season. The World No. 10 has advanced to the quarterfinal or better in five tournaments, which includes a semifinal finish at the Australian Open. The 25-year-old, who missed the grass-court warm-up events with a right hip injury, lost a third-round match to Ivo Karlovic at Wimbledon in 2009.
Qualifier Robert Kendrick, ranked World No. 161, remains in search of his first Tour-level victory of the year. The 30-year-old American has spent the majority of the season competing on the ATP Challenger Tour. Kendrick will attempt to win his first round at Wimbledon since 2006.
Prediction: Tsonga in four sets.
