  • Soderling, Ferrer, Isner in Day 2 Wimbledon action

    6/22/10 4:28 AM | Ricky Dimon
Soderling, Ferrer, Isner in Day 2 Wimbledon action Robin Soderling will begin his 2010 Wimbledon quest on Tuesday against Robby Ginepri. David Ferrer and John Isner are also looking for places in the second round.

    (6) Robin Soderling vs. Robby Ginepri

Soderling has already lost to Ginepri in the first round of a tournament this year, but the world No. 6 hopes things will be different on Tuesday at Wimbledon when they meet for the third time. Ginepri upset Soderling 6-4, 7-5 in Chennai, a resulted that was preceded by Soderling's 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory on the clay courts of Hamburg in 2007. The 72nd-ranked American recently enjoyed a fourth-round showing at the French Open, but his game is more conducive to clay courts than grass. Soderling, who reached the Roland Garros final for a second straight season, should advance in no more than four sets unless his serve and forehand are completely lost.

Nicolas Kiefer vs. (9) David Ferrer

Kiefer and Ferrer will also be going head-to-head for the third time in their careers when they do battle at Wimbledon on Tuesday. Their first encounter came six years ago at the Canada Masters, with Kiefer dominating 6-3, 6-1. Ferrer won their more recent clash 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at last year's French Open and is a considerable favorite to get the best of Kiefer once again. The 11th-ranked Spaniard, however, must show that he is over the disappointment of losing to Jurgen Melzer during the opening week of Roland Garros. Kiefer remains talented, but he has played just three ATP matches this year due to injury and is toiling at No. 178 in the world. Ferrer in four sets is the pick.

    (Q) Nicolas Mahut vs. (23) John Isner

Mahut's 2010 Wimbledon campaign has already been an eventful one and he has not even played a main-draw match. In his second round of qualifying, he outlasted Alex Bogdanovic 3-6, 6-3, 24-22. The 148th-ranked Frenchman then stormed back from two sets down to stun Stefan Koubek 6-7(8), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Grass has always been Mahut's favorite surface and it should help him keep points short and limit any lingering fatigue. Isner's big game can work well on this surface, but the low bounces give him trouble while also hindering his serve's effectiveness. Mahut beat the 6'9'' American two years ago at Queen's Club and while Isner is a much different player now, Mahut should still have the edge on grass.

Söderling destroyed Ginepri, brilliant serving and playing

bjawad , 6/22/10 7:19 PM

Soderling looked scary today. I don't know who can beat him, if he continues hitting and serving like this. Just 1 pt lost on serve in 2 sets! That's ridiculous..

imjimmy , 6/22/10 8:21 PM

well we will have to wait and see who is right about the Isner-Mahut match

5th set, suspended due to darkness

RickyDimon , 6/22/10 10:47 PM

18:18 in the 5th at the mo. both men had ~ 50 aces each!

rfzr , 6/23/10 5:01 PM

OMG 22-22 in the fifth!!! How many records has this one broken?

SenorPlaid , 6/23/10 5:31 PM

The tale of the tape thus far:

Aces: Isner 59, Mahut 53

Winners: Isner ... 193!! Mahut ... 189!!

Errors: Isner 35, Mahut 38

This is just a shooting match ...

SenorPlaid , 6/23/10 5:35 PM

for all the records broken...go to the wimbledon draw blog......

vrael , 6/23/10 5:37 PM

this is insane. This is the equivalent of a 10 set match!!

tj600 , 6/23/10 5:53 PM

LOL. This is getting ridiculous. FIFTY games in the fifth set.

cherylmurray , 6/23/10 6:03 PM

WHAT, they are still at the fifth set super tiebreaker? LOL.

You asked for competitive match, you got it, tune in to this match.

Is this already a record?

Raindrops , 6/23/10 7:06 PM

it's a TON of records, raindrops.

70 games in 1 set is NUTS.

cherylmurray , 6/23/10 7:09 PM

This fifth set alone ... so far ... is a few minutes short of 5 hours!

Isner broke Mahut once in the first set,
Mahut broke Isner once in the second set,
yesterday,
since then there have been no breaks of service (and many service games to love or 15)...
one of them I suppose will tire out eventually and falter with their serve...

chlorostoma , 6/23/10 7:20 PM

what??
there was a thread for this match??
and i have been keeping up a one man update of records at the wimbledon draw analysis blog!!

clayking , 6/23/10 7:23 PM

another record tumbled!!!
most aces ever in a match..
79..
and mahut is 3rd on all time list with 67..
4 aces away from touching 150 mark!!

clayking , 6/23/10 7:27 PM

correction: the fifth set was not short of 5 hours a few minutes ago... it was over 4 hours, now already 4:20...

chlorostoma , 6/23/10 7:28 PM

Thanks cheryl.

I am loving this match.

Whoever comes out winner, he will lose on the next level because of exhaustion. This match was suspended yesterday so the winner will have to play again tomorrow. Can't imagine how the winner will recover in less than 24 hours.

Is this an exhibition by the way?

Raindrops , 6/23/10 7:28 PM

oh,
and the match, as of now, is 5 games short of all time record of most games in a match!!

clayking , 6/23/10 7:29 PM

rain,
the next opponent is debakker, who himself has played a 5 setter 4 hr+ match..
but he will still be fresher..

clayking , 6/23/10 7:31 PM

Spare a thought for alisa kleybanova..
she is supposed to play next on court 18, and she has been waiting for nearly 5 hrs...

clayking , 6/23/10 7:38 PM

lolz clayking, I didn't know you are in W blog draw analysis, I just checked it now and I read a lot post of yours.

I'll follow you there.

Raindrops , 6/23/10 7:41 PM

Seriously? Play a super tiebreak in the Isner-Mahut match already!

stu , 6/23/10 7:53 PM

87 games in one set is unfathomable.

cherylmurray , 6/23/10 8:15 PM

Stu.......i agree............this is just...............im lost for words!!!

Monalysa , 6/23/10 8:23 PM

whoever wins will go direct to the hospital.. this is just unbelievable...

linuta , 6/23/10 8:27 PM

can't someone intervene, and introduce sudden death or something? this is ridiculous. i mean they're clearly both winners. are you trying to kill them out there?!

stu , 6/23/10 8:33 PM

What the ... have they been playing all day?
I just turned on TV and commentators told me that this was a 'real' score and not to be alarmed. Ha ha

smr , 6/23/10 8:33 PM

Hey, I think John is supposed to play doubles today also. Heh heh

smr , 6/23/10 8:37 PM

47:47.....WTF.... I was watching Nole and Ilija....
I think they deserve special ATP points for this. This is one of those moment when history is made!!!!
Bravo for both of them!!!

zare , 6/23/10 8:39 PM

Woweee

cherylmurray , 6/23/10 8:42 PM

that's the sad thing zare, doesn't seem like anyone was even watching this match while the others were on...now i'm sure they are!

stu , 6/23/10 8:44 PM

isn't it funny that even the loser of this match will be within the top 20 on the stats boards for until the second week, maybe even the entire tournament?

stu , 6/23/10 8:46 PM

stu..
you are absolutely wrong..
i was watching only this match..
i can now proudly say i saw history in making!!
and you check out the blog "wimbledon draw analysis"..
you can see who all followed this match..

clayking , 6/23/10 8:47 PM

stu ... all the 'other' matches have finished. This is the only game in town.

smr , 6/23/10 8:53 PM

aaah, so THAT's where you guys are!!

stu , 6/23/10 8:53 PM

in this match can't be a loser and a winner, they are both winners... they should play doubles in the next match XD

linuta , 6/23/10 8:54 PM

I got up late today and now I need to know what on earth is going on with this match? Is it over, will it ever be over? This is insane!

Nativenewyorker , 6/23/10 8:57 PM

So who thinks they'll still be playing tomorrow?

smr , 6/23/10 9:10 PM

this should be put on centre tomorrow if it's not done tonight. am sure the queen would love to see the conclusion :P

Sib69 , 6/23/10 9:36 PM

sib -

no way, muzz would never get on :)

smr -

I said 2 hours ago it wouldn't surprise me if this lasted till tomorrow and I haven'te seen anything to change my mind. Failing injury, neither of these guys looks like getting broken.

alex , 6/23/10 9:49 PM

Have to say, never has history making been so unexciting - it takes stamina to WATCH tbhis one :)

alex , 6/23/10 9:53 PM

Mahut taking a dive! AHHAAHAHAHAHA this guy is killing me!

cherylmurray , 6/23/10 9:58 PM

mahut is so mentally strong - can't believe he's French:)

alex , 6/23/10 10:08 PM

And there it is ... to be continued. Tomorrow!!

smr , 6/23/10 10:11 PM
