  • Tipsarevic, Stakhovsky battle for UNICEF Open title

    6/19/10 4:22 AM | Ricky Dimon
Tipsarevic, Stakhovsky battle for UNICEF Open title Janko Tipsarevic is one win away from his first career ATP title. Standing in his way on Saturday in the 's-Hertogenbosch final is Sergiy Stakhovsky.

Janko Tipsarevic and Sergiy Stakhovsky will be squaring off for the second time in their careers at the ATP level when they meet in the UNICEF Open final on Saturday.

Stakhovsky got the best of Tipsarevic 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 two years ago in Zagreb quarterfinals. They faced each other more recently in the title match of last season's Mons Challenger, which Tipsarevic won 7-6(4), 6-3.

Tipsarevic, however, is still looking for his first title on the ATP World Tour. The 51st-ranked Serb reached his first final last fall in Moscow, but he fell to Mikhail Youzhny in a tight three-setter. Tipsarevic now looks poised for a breakthrough having taken out Jeremy Chardy, Arnaud Clement, Peter Luczak, and an in-form Benjamin Becker so far this week.

Stakhovsky is not as well-known as his opponent, but he is a two-time winner on the ATP circuit. The 71st-ranked Ukrainian went on to win the Zagreb title in 2008 after beating Tipsarevic and he also prevailed last year in St. Petersburg. Stakhovsky booked a spot in his third career ATP final by defeating Kristof Vliegen, Igor Sijsling, Santiago Giraldo, and Xavier Malisse.

"He’s not a guy who’s going to kill you," Tipsarevic said of Stakhovsky. "But in my opinion he plays very smart for this surface. If you look at the scores he’s had this week, I don’t think he’s had trouble in beating anybody."

"Janko plays well on grass," Stakhovsky noted. "He has been off for some time but now he's back in great shape. I think that it will be a very equal match."

This could go either way, but Tipsarevic's track record on grass is impressive and his win over Becker should not be underestimated. Look for the No. 7 seed to capture his first ATP title in three sets.

No, I did not watch the match.
But the scoreline of 6-3,6-0 suggested a beating..

Tipsy always fail at the last hurdle. I remember him losing in the final at Moscow last year to Youzhny, it seem quite typical of him - played one good match to take out a good player, only to lose the next match!
