Gilles Simon will attempt to win his second match of the year on Wednesday, as he takes to the court against Andrey Kuznetsov. The Frenchman is joined in second-round action by top seed Nicolas Almagro, who faces Denis Istomin.
(1) Nicolas Almagro vs. Denis Istomin
World No. 18 Nicolas Almagro is bidding for his sixth quarterfinal appearance in 2010, set to meet first-time opponent Denis Istomin. The top-seeded Spaniard began his second AEGON International with a 7-5, 7-6(3) victory over Lukasz Kubot. Almagro remains on track to capture his 30th win of the season.
World No. 74 Denis Istomin snagged his third grass-court win of the year on Monday, following his 6-0, 6-3, opening-round dismissal of Eduardo Schwank. The 23-year-old will be looking to book his second consecutive quarterfinal at the AEGON International.
Prediction: Istomin for the win in a very tight race.
(3) Gilles Simon vs. (Q)Andrey Kuznetsov
Third seed Gilles Simon recorded his maiden win of the year Monday afternoon, holding on to oust Evgeny Korolev in three sets. The former World No. 6 Frenchman made a successful return to the ATP World Tour after missing several months with a serious knee injury. The World No. 32 aims for his first quarterfinal since late 2009, when he finished among the final four in Valencia.
World No. 272 Andrey Kuznetsov came through the opening round after fellow qualifier Kei Nishikori retired with a hip injury. The 19-year-old Russian, competing in his first Tour-level event this week, is 1-0 for the 2010 season.
Prediction: Simon in straight sets.
