Tommy Robredo and Marcos Baghdatis will contest their first matches of the week on Wednesday in 's-Hertogenbosch. They are set to take on Simon Greul and Peter Luczak, respectively.
Simon Greul vs. (3) Tommy Robredo
Greul and Robredo will be squaring off for the second time in their careers when they meet in the second round of the UNICEF Open on Wednesday. Robredo won both of their previous encounters; 6-2, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(3) at Wimbledon in 2006 and 7-6(1), 7-6(2) earlier this season on the hard courts of Auckland.
The third-seeded Spaniard is just 9-10 for the season and he is down at No. 36 in the world. While he does his best work on clay, Robredo is also a solid hard-court player who should be able to find some success on grass. Greul, who registers at 67th in the world, reached round two with a straight-set win over Robin Haase while Robredo got a bye. This one could go either way, but Greul also prefers slower surfaces so he probably won't have enough to pull off an upset.
Peter Luczak vs. (2) Marcos Baghdatis
Luczak and Baghdatis will be going head-to-head at the ATP level for the first time in their careers on Wednesday. They did face each other six years ago on the Challenger circuit, with Baghdatis taking a clay-court encounter 6-4, 6-3. The 27th-ranked Cypriot, who earned a bye as the No. 2 seed, is coming off a loss to Philipp Petzschner in Halle but he remains a dangerous grass-court threat.
More of a clay-court player, Luczak was also dealt a tough hand last week. He fell to fellow Australian and eventual champion Lleyton Hewitt 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round. Luczak is just 7-18 for his 2010 campaign and his heavy topspin should not trouble his opponent on a slick surface. Baghdatis in straight sets is the pick.
