  • Tipsarevic, Chardy meet in UNICEF Open first round

    6/14/10 11:24 PM | Ricky Dimon
Tipsarevic, Chardy meet in UNICEF Open first round Janko Tipsarevic and Jeremy Chardy will be going head-to-head in 's-Hertogenbosch on Tuesday. Benjamin Becker and Jarkko Nieminen are also looking for a spot in the second round.

    (7) Janko Tipsarevic vs. Jeremy Chardy

Tipsarevic and Chardy will be squaring off for the fourth time in their careers and second time this season when they meet in the first round of the UNICEF Open on Tuesday. Chardy won their most recent encounter 6-4, 6-4 on the clay courts of the Rome Masters, but Tipsarevic leads the head-to-head series 2-1 having scored a pair of hard-court victories in 2008.

Grass courts should give Tipsarevic a slight edge, as he once defeated Andy Roddick at Wimbledon and is a two-time fourth-round performer at the All-England Club. The 51st-ranked Serb is just 6-10 for his 2010 campaign, but Chardy is only 10-16 and down at No. 54 in the rankings. Furthermore, Chardy's heavy topspin does not get much of a kick on grass. Look for Tipsarevic to advance after three competitive sets.

    (8) Benjamin Becker vs. Jarkko Nieminen

Becker and Nieminen are set for a third career encounter on Tuesday in 's-Hertogenbosch, where Becker is the defending champion. The 48th-ranked German qualified last year and went all the way to the title, defeating Fernando Verdasco and Michael Llodra in the process. A stellar grass-court player, Becker is also coming off a semifinal appearance in Halle, where he fell to eventual champion Lleyton Hewitt in three sets.

This week's No. 8 seed beat Nieminen 6-7(5), 7-6(6), 6-4 four years ago in Tokyo, but the Finn returned the favor 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(5) earlier this season in Delray Beach. Nieminen, who is 9-13 in 2010 and registers at 64th in the world, is always a dangerous player but would much prefer to face Becker on a slower surface. As long as Becker is putting in a high percentage of first serves, he should take this in two tight sets.
