Both Philipp Petzschner and Xavier Malisse are coming off strong showings last week in Halle and Queen's, respectively. One of them, however, will be out right away in 's-Hertogenbosch.
Philipp Petzschner and Xavier Malisse will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they meet in the first round of the UNICEF Open on Monday.
Petzschner reached the Halle semifinals last week, taking out Marcos Baghdatis, Viktor Troicki, and Lukas Lacko before falling to Roger Federer 7-6(3), 6-4. The German is 18-12 for his 2010 campaign and he is back in the Top 40 in the world, four spots of his career-high at No. 39.
Malisse had been struggling this season, but he enjoyed a stellar week on the grass courts of Queen's Club. The 75th-ranked Belgian dismissed Dmitry Tursunov, Bernard Tomic, and Novak Djokovic before succumbing to eventual champion Sam Querrey in the quarterfinals.
Petzschner does not have a good history in 's-Hertogenbosch. This year's No. 5 seed lost his opener in his last three trips to this event and he is 1-5 lifetime. Malisse is making his first 's-Hertogenbosch appearance since 2001, when he reached the quarters.
This one looks like a tossup, but Petzschner should have a slight edge on grass thanks to a superior serve. Unless Malisse gets plenty of opportunities at second-serve returns, look for Petzschner to prevail in three sets.
