Gilles Simon and James Blake will make their respective returns to competition after long layoffs with knee injuries. The players set to open at the AEGON International on Monday against Evgeny Korolev and Julien Benneteau.
(3) Gilles Simon vs. Evgeny Korolev
Third seed Gilles Simon holds a 3-0 head-to-head series lead over first-round opponent Evgeny Korolev. The pair last met at the 2009 tournament in Bangkok, where a quarterfinal meeting went to the Frenchman in three sets.
Simon, ranked world No. 32, is bidding for his first victory of the 2010 season, having struggled with injury for most of the year. The 25-year-old has not competed since March, when he lost second-round battle to Horacio Zeballos at the Masters 1000 Miami.
World No. 77 Korolev will be looking to rebound after suffering his eighth opening-round defeat in 2010. The 22-year-old crashed out early at Queen’s Club, adding to back-to-back first-round losses in Madrid and Roland Garros. Korolev, entering into the tournament with an 8-15 record, has not won two consecutive matches since the Australian Open.
(4) Julien Benneteau vs. James Blake
Fourth seed Julien Benneteau will attempt to break a 1-1 series tie with James Blake late Monday, as the two prepare to contest their first career-meeting on grass.
The world No. 38 advanced to the round of 16 at Queen’s Club, where he lost to surprise semifinalist Feliciano Lopez in straight sets. The 28-year-old veteran, appearing in his third AEGON International, is 16-13 for the year.
Blake commences his Eastbourne debut ranked outside the top 100. The 30-year-old, currently ranked World No. 110, missed nearly three months of competition with a serious knee injury. The former world No. 4 is 8-7 in 2010.
