Two of the game's most well-respected veterans will be going up against each other in the Halle final on Sunday. Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt are set for a 25th encounter.
Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt will be squaring off for the 25th time in their careers when they do battle in the final of the Gerry Weber Open on Sunday. Federer leads the head-to-head series 17-7, including 3-1 on grass.
Hewitt last beat Federer seven years ago, a span of 15 consecutive matches having gone the way of the top-seeded Swiss. Their most recent meeting came at this year's Australian Open, with Federer dominating 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.
The five-time Halle champion went on to win the Aussie Open, but this would be his first title since then. While Federer did not astound on clay courts, he is clearly back in fine form on grass. So far in Halle he has dismissed Jarkko Nieminen, Alejandro Falla, Philipp Kohlschreiber, and Philipp Petzschner, all in straight sets.
Hewitt did not drop a set in his first three victories, taking out Peter Luczak, Thiemo De Bakker, and Andreas Beck. The 32nd-ranked Aussie came dangerously close to losing his semifinal clash on Saturday, but he battled back to beat Benjamin Becker 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 6-2. Hewitt, a former Wimbledon champion who thrives on grass, is 16-7 for his 2010 campaign.
Of course, the No. 8 seed is going up against one of the best grass-courters ever. "He’s obviously the best grass-court player around," Hewitt said of Federer. "It’s a good test for me to go out there. I’m going to have to obviously play extremely well and execute what I want to do out there and try and put him under some kind of pressure."
"We have known each other for years and once played doubles together in Wimbledon and I always looked up to him," said the second-ranked Swiss. "It is something special to play against him."
It should be extra special for Federer, who is a massive favorite in this one. Hewitt could keep it close if he gets frequent looks at second-serve returns, but Federer in straight sets is the pick.

It would be 3 hard fought sets, but expect Federer to prevail in the end.
phoenix , 6/13/10 1:22 PM
It is unrealistic to believe Hewitt will be able to do more than put up his habitual tough fight. However, Federer is still showing occasional signs of frailty so it is not beyond the realms of possiblility Hewitt could take the match to a three-setter.
ed251137 , 6/13/10 1:22 PM
well, against someone of fed's calibre, you don't get too many chances..
unforced errors on break point will never help..
nor will unforced errors on game points..
clayking , 6/13/10 1:46 PM
hewitt breaks federer
saxenanalin , 6/13/10 1:59 PM
law of averages has induced a UE from fed on break point..
can hewitt do something??
clayking , 6/13/10 2:00 PM
@clayking
I must tell u dat noida is just 15 min from my home
saxenanalin , 6/13/10 2:01 PM

clayking , 6/13/10 2:03 PM
well me in sarita vihar(south delhi)
saxenanalin , 6/13/10 2:04 PM
fed breaks back
saxenanalin , 6/13/10 2:05 PM
I never understand it..
y do experienced campaigners like hewitt make UEs on break points against fed??
if petzschner does it, is acceptable..
he gets nerves..
but wat about someone like hewitt??
really it would be better to see fed giving a beatdown than fed winning due to hewitt's nerves..
clayking , 6/13/10 2:07 PM
Come on Lleyton. Take a set!
phoenix , 6/13/10 2:35 PM
cmmon fedex

phoenix, 6/13/10 1:22 PM: We voiced exactly the same thought at the same moment.
And we were right to think it!
ed251137 , 6/13/10 2:55 PM
federer made to look like a pedestrian on a grass court.........lol
vrael , 6/13/10 3:00 PM
If fed comes through this without hewitt choking, there will be no doubt in my mind that this wimbledon, fed is the favourite..
if fed wins with a hewitt choke, still the dge is with fed..
but if fed falls (for which there is a 5% chance) fed will be the 2nd fav..
clayking , 6/13/10 3:03 PM
federer holds..........match very much alive!!!
vrael , 6/13/10 3:04 PM
fed must break immediately if he has to win the title
saxenanalin , 6/13/10 3:05 PM
hewitt holds......
@clayking...whom are u supporting??
vrael , 6/13/10 3:08 PM
Oh well, hewitt easily..
I support fed only when he is playing against a player i do not like(eg- youzhny) or when a final of rafa -fed is possible....
but hewitt falls in category of players I like..
so obviously, it is the australian counterpuncher over swiss maestro..
clayking , 6/13/10 3:13 PM
The match is virtually over for fed
saxenanalin , 6/13/10 3:29 PM
3 points!!
clayking , 6/13/10 3:30 PM

this has been a week of UPSETS.......RICKY...how many have u ppl got wrong this week...lol!!!
vrael , 6/13/10 3:40 PM
ed, we were only partly correct; that it would be a hard-fought 3 setter. we were wrong about the outcome though. still, i am happy for Lleyton.
phoenix , 6/13/10 3:42 PM
ooops. sorry ed, it was only me who was partly wrong. you did not say anything about the outcome. :-)
phoenix , 6/13/10 3:47 PM
:( :( :(
Max , 6/13/10 3:47 PM
CONGRATS to Hewitt! I just saw a match point - what a way to win!
And with that unexpected final at Queens, anyone dare predict the Wimbledon champion? :))
danica , 6/13/10 3:47 PM
Fabulous Leyton Hewitt
Showed Andy how to do it!
deuce , 6/13/10 3:50 PM
STOMACH PUNCH to saxenanalin...what did I tell you? Roger is heading to a slump he cannot win even a gelatin tournament. What did you say, IMPOSSIBLE to beat Roger on Grass?
EAT grass along with Roger lolz.
Vamos Lleyton.
Raindrops , 6/13/10 3:51 PM
Not sure who will win, but I dare say that it will be a Rafa-Roger finals at Wimbledon this year!
phoenix , 6/13/10 3:54 PM
I hope Roger wont crash out bfre QF
Max , 6/13/10 3:59 PM
I just don't see the fire in Fed anymore, he seems content just to play and if he wins great if not it doesn't seem to matter. Hewitt had the look of someone who wanted to win and it paid off.
cal23 , 6/13/10 4:07 PM
Interesting how the draw will turn out at Wimby!... This is good for tennis in some ways.... At least the predictability of a FEDAL finals is now a bit in DOUBT!........ The doors are openning for the others to make some noise at wimbledon!
McQ , 6/13/10 4:09 PM
Hewitt d. Federer - http://www.tennistalk.com/en/news/20100613/Hewitt_upsets_Federer_for_H alle_title
RickyDimon , 6/13/10 4:18 PM
phoenix: Actually I was wrong too. I said it was unrealistic to think Hewitt would do more than put up a good fight. had rather assumed Federer would win but in three sets.
cal23: You're right: more and more we are seeing Federer play as if he didn't care if he wins or loses - until it comes to a Slam that is. Nevertheless it was a great win by Hewitt who was playing some awesome tennis and will be brimming with confidence for Wimbledon. By the same token Federer will be very unhappy about sending out the message he can be beaten on grass.
ed251137 , 6/13/10 4:33 PM
ed: Hewitt did play well no doubt but it was not the Federer we are used to seeing. I wouldn't mind betting that Rafa will see someone else on the other side of the court in the Wimbly final :)
cal23 , 6/13/10 4:38 PM
congrats Lleyton.
Roger was sickness 2008 2009(mono) And 2010 (disease of lungs) After the sickness,Roger always becomes in a slump.
Roger participates in the this tournament until 2015. He contracted. It is happiness of all Roger's fans. Love Roger
RogerLove , 6/13/10 7:32 PM
Someone is obviously suffering from mental breakdown trying to find solace back year 2008 har har har.
Raindrops , 6/13/10 8:30 PM
Roger just sign up for Halle until 2015... for the appearance fee or what?... He probably thought BEFORE the finals that he'd OWN this event for as long as he's in it!
McQ , 6/14/10 2:36 AM
"for the appearance fee or what?"
comment looks like height of haterd feeling for an individual!!
atleast use your head sometime instead of ur heart :P
