Lleyton Hewitt will go up against Andreas Beck on Friday in Halle. Philipp Petzschner is also looking for a spot in the semifinals as he takes on Lukas Lacko.
(8) Lleyton Hewitt vs. (WC) Andreas Beck
Hewitt and Becker will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they do battle in the quarterfinals of the Gerry Weber Open on Friday. Beck is one of five Germans still alive at the event, but upsetting Hewitt is a difficult task for a player who has played just 14 ATP matches this season due to injury. Becker booked his spot in this match with wins over Sergiy Stakhovsky and Nicolas Kiefer.
Having suffered with physical problems of his own (hip surgery), Hewitt is now back in business. The 32nd-ranked Aussie reached the French Open third round and so far in Halle has has taken out Peter Luczak and Thiemo De Bakker, both in easy straight sets. Look for Hewitt to earn another routine victory.
Lukas Lacko vs. Philipp Petzschner
Lacko and Petzschner will be squaring off for the third time in their careers--and already the third time this year--on Friday. Petzschner won both of their previous clashes in three sets; 6-7(1), 6-2, 6-2 in Zagreb and 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 in Memphis. Interestingly, both of those were also quarterfinal matches.
Petzschner has to be confident given his past history with Lacko and he has already scored nice wins over Marcos Baghdatis and Viktor Troicki. Lacko has dismissed Jeremy Chardy and lucky loser Dominik Meffert. Another three-setter could be on the menu, but Petzschner should advance to the semis.
