An on-fire David Ferrer will resume his French Open campaign on Saturday. Standing in his way of a fourth-round appearance is Jurgen Melzer.
Jurgen Melzer is in a quarter that lacks both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, but it would fair to argue that he still got a unfavorable draw at the French Open.
That's just how good David Ferrer has been, and that's who Melzer has to go up against in the third round on Saturday afternoon. They have met on three previous occasions and Ferrer leads the head-to-head series 3-0, having prevailed twice on clay and most recently on the Rotterdam hard courts in 2009.
To say Melzer is not catching Ferrer at the right time for their fourth meeting would be an understatement. Aside from Nadal, the 11th-ranked Spaniard has been the clay-court season's hottest player, by a wide margin. Ferrer is an amazing 35-10 for his 2010 campaign and he has reached at least the semifinals of all six of his clay-court tournaments. So far at Roland Garros he has demolished both David Guez and Xavier Malisse.
Melzer, however, will be no pushover. The veteran Austrian has maintained a solid ranking of No. 27 in the world and he is an impressive 22-12 for the season. An underrated clay-courter, Melzer reached the Barcelona third round (lost to Fernando Verdasco) and the Madrid quarterfinals (lost to Nicolas Almagro). He kicked off his stay in Paris with a straight-set rout of Dudi Sela before ousting Nicolas Mahut in four sets.
This one should not be as much of a beatdown as Ferrer's previous two efforts because Melzer owns a big lefty serve and is tough to break, even in relatively slow conditions. Still, the No. 9 seed is in incredible form at the moment and it would be a surprise if he dropped a set on Saturday.

Looks like Melzer is going to take this in 3. He played so well and ferrer was just a little off ... not quite getting to the ball as fast as he normally does. :(

deuce , 5/29/10 4:52 PM
HORRIBLE match from Ferrer. He was tired looking. Melzer played well, but if Ferrer had been anywhere near his normal level he would have surely beaten the Austrian.

clayking , 5/29/10 7:06 PM
ohhh I see, this is the reason why clayking is so silent and can be found nowhere. Cognac, Vodka, Brandy? Sure he's drowning his sorrow as Ferrero, Ferrer have lost their respective matches.
hey clayking, cheer up kid, don't know if you are aware that Rafa has won his match, he needs our support here at TT...come out!
Raindrops , 5/29/10 8:10 PM
clayking,
I just heard about Ferrero getting beaten, so I wanted to give you my condolences. The biggest shock for me was hearing about Ferrer being beaten by Melzer! That is the upset of the tournament so far! Two great Spanish players now out of the tournament. Almagro seems to be on fire and Verdasco struggled, but got through. It's fortunate that Rafa will only have to meet one of them.
At least be happy that Rafa is through to the 4th round! :)
