• Youzhny, Gulbis square off in Madrid second round

    5/12/10 3:13 AM | Ricky Dimon
Youzhny, Gulbis square off in Madrid second round Mikhail Youzhny and Ernests Gulbis are set for a blockbuster second-round affair in Madrid on Wednesday. Stanislas Wawrinka and Leonardo Mayers are also eyeing a place in the third round.

    (10) Mikhail Youzhny vs. Ernests Gulbis

Youzhny and Gulbis will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers when they do battle in a marquee second-round matchup at the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open on Wednesday afternoon. Their only previous encounter came three years ago on the hard courts of Moscow, where Youzhny treated the Russian crowd to a 6-3, 6-2 victory.

A much-improved player now, Gulbis is up to a career-high ranking of 34th in the world and should provide far more resistance this time. The 21-year-old Latvian reached the semifinals of the Rome Masters two weeks ago before taking a set off Rafael Nadal. Gulbis kicked off his Madrid campaign on Tuesday with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Estoril champion Albert Montanes.

Youzhny is also one of the hottest players on tour right now. He registers at No. 13 in the world after winning the Munich title last weekend, defeating No. 1 seed Marin Cilic in the final. Youzhny improved his 2010 record to 21-6 when he took out Lukas Lacko 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 in first-round action on Tuesday. This one could go either way, but look for the Russian to hold of Gulbis in three entertaining sets.

Leonardo Mayer vs. (15) Stanislas Wawrinka

Mayer and Wawrinka will be meeting for the first time in their careers when they take the court on Wednesday. Both players can be effective on clay and they should find the fast Madrid conditions to be conducive to their games. Wawrinka, though, has an edge as the No. 15 seed and No. 23 player in the world. The Swiss reached the Belgrade semifinals last week and eased past Marcel Granollers 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday.

Julien Benneteau made sure that Mayer had a much tougher time advancing to round two, but the Argentine battled through a tough encounter on Monday to prevail 6-7(9), 7-5, 6-4 in two hours and 31 minutes. He should be fine having had a day off for rest, but chances are the underdog won't have enough for Wawrinka even at 100 percent. Wawrinka in straight sets is the pick.

about gulbis,
i think yesterday or day before, he was asked..
"were you happy that despite losing you were able to take a set off rafa??"
gulbis promptly replied, "NO!"
he added with a laugh,"i would rather win ugly than losing beautifully"

clayking , 5/12/10 8:33 AM

LOL (clayking) Gulbis does appear to have a sense of humour! Losing is losing it is never beautiful (in my humble opinion). Winning is beautiful never ugly. The statement does show spunk in his character, maybe gulbis will give us much more of the beauty of winning, and less of the ugliness of losing in the future! LOL Go forth, do your thing Gulbis! Damage and WIN! There is nothing ugly about winning. It's all beautiful. :)

I would take that as:

Play ugly (brute tennis i.ei plenty of errors) but winning.
Play beautiful (artistic i.e. smooth gliding ballet dancer/butterfly strokes) but losing.
