David Nalbandian and Ernests Gulbis will be in action on Monday at the Monte-Carlo Masters. They are set to face Andreas Beck and Marco Chiudinelli, respectively.
David Nalbandian vs. Andreas Beck
David Nalbandian and Andreas Beck will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they meet in the opening round of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters on Monday. Both men are on the comeback trail from physical problems, but Nalbandian has played eight matches this season to Beck's two. In fact, the 53rd-ranked German is still searching for his first victory of 2010.
Nalbandian, who underwent 2009 hip surgery, is 6-2 for the year and coming off a third-round, three-set loss to Rafael Nadal at the Sony Ericsson Open. The 147th-ranked Argentine is not back to his best level, but he is clearly in better form than Beck. With clay giving Nalbandian an even bigger advantage, he should get the job done in straight sets.
Ernests Gulbis vs. Marco Chiudinelli
Gulbis and Chiudinelli will be squaring off for the second time in their careers and second time in as many months when they do battle in first-round action on Monday. At the Indian Wells Masters, Gulbis won a first-round encounter 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. The 21-year-old Latvian is a solid 11-5 (with his first career title in Delray Beach) on the year following a horrendous 2009 campaign.
Chiudinelli, by contrast, was the 2009 ATP Comeback Player of the Year and is now slumping. The 28-year-old Swiss is 3-10 this season and is far from a clay-court specialist. Gulbis, however, rarely performs well without any momentum and he has not played since Indian Wells. Look for Chiudinelli to pull off a three-set upset.
