Florent Serra and Victor Hanescu are set for a semifinal clash in Casablanca on Saturday. The winner gets a shot at the title against either Stanislas Wawrinka or Potito Starace.
Having finished runner-up to Juan Carlos Ferrero at last year's Grand Prix Hassan II, Florent Serra is one win away from making a repeat appearance in the title match.
Standing in Serra's way is No. 3 seed Victor Hanescu. The two veterans have met twice in their careers, with Serra leading the head-to-head series 2-0. At their first meeting in the 2008 French Open second round, Serra prevailed 6-4, 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(5). Hanescu retired a year later on the clay courts of Gstaad after losing the first set 6-4.
Hanescu has to like his chances of getting on the scoreboard against Serra, because the 28-year-old Romanian has already eliminated two of the most dangerous unseeded players in this draw. After taking out Jarkko Nieminen in three sets, Hanescu survived Richard Gasquet 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3 in Friday's quarterfinals. Hanescu is now owns a respectable 7-6 match record for his 2010 campaign.
Serra is simply maintaining his fine form this week. The eighth-seeded Frenchman advanced two rounds at the Sony Ericsson Open before extending Roger Federer to a pair of tiebreakers. So far in Casablanca, Serra has ousted Santiago Ventura, Stephane Robert, and No. 2 seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, dropping just a single set to Robert.
Hanescu will have a chance in this one if he wins a lot of free points with his big first serve. Serra, however, has the edge in current form and must feel right at home having achieved success last season in Casablanca.
Serra in three sets is the pick.
