Brazlian Thomaz Bellucci will take on giant-killer Olivier Rochus for a round of 16 spot. Joining the Brazilian in third round action will be Spain’s Tommy Robredo.
Belgium’s Olivier Rochus has already had a fantastic tournament. The Belgian had a tough first round match win against Richard Gasquet, which he followed up with one of the biggest wins of his career – an upset victory over world No. 2 Novak Djokovic. Next up for the Belgian is No. 27 seed Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil.
Bellucci did not perform particularly well in Indian Wells (he lost in the 3rd round to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez), but he has been having a good year regardless. The Brazilian won the 250 event in Santiago and he had a quarterfinal effort in Costa Do Sauipe.
Rochus beat Bellucci the only time the two players have met, at the indoor tournament in Stockholm back in 2009. That was a different Bellucci, however. This new 2010 version is a much tougher opponent. The No. 59 ranked Rochus might be considered a slight favorite based on his form at the moment, but Bellucci is more than capable of getting the win.
Tommy Robredo of Spain will also be in 3rd round action against Germany’s Benjamin Becker. The German dispatched Indian Wells champion Ivan Ljubicic in the second round, but No. 18 Robredo might be too much to ask of Becker.
The last (and only) time the two men met, Robredo flattened Becker 6-2, 6-1, which was on the hard courts of Beijing last year. Expect Robredo to get through this match in similar fashion.
