Taylor Dent and David Nalbandian will be in action at the Miami Masters on Wednesday. Dent is going up against Rainer Schuettler and Nalbandian takes on Lukasz Kubot.
Taylor Dent vs. (Q) Rainer Schuettler
Dent and Schuettler will be squaring off for the first time in their careers when the two veterans go head-to-head in the first round of the Sony Ericsson Open on Wednesday evening. Schuettler has already won two matches in Miami; he came through qualifying by outlasting Kevin Kim 7-5 in the third set on Tuesday. Incidentally, the 33-year-old German also qualified in Indian Wells and faced Rafael Nadal in the second round. Who will the winner of Dent-Schuettler get in Miami? Again, Nadal. Dent enjoyed a remarkable comeback from injury last season, but the 83rd-ranked American is just 2-7 at the ATP level for his 2010 campaign. Look for Schuettler to advance in three sets.
(WC) David Nalbandian vs. Lukasz Kubot
What a difference a year makes. After hip surgery last season, Nalbandian suddenly finds himself as the underdog--at least according to the rankings--against Kubot, who was virtually unknown prior to a breakout 2009 campaign. Nalbandian registers at 161st in the world while Kubot comes in at No. 43, one spot off his career-high mark. The 28-year-old Argentine, however, has won four matches this season so he is clearly playing decent tennis again. It should be enough to prevail in his first career meeting against Kubot, who has a big serve that can work well on a hard court but still generally prefers clay.
Marco Chiudinelli vs. Floridan Mayer
Both Chiudinelli and Mayer are back in business after both suffering more than their fair share of injury problems. Chiudinelli won the 2009 Comeback Player of the Year Award and he currently registers at 57th in the world. Mayer is back up to 49th in the world and he is coming off a title at the Sunrise Challenger, which is usually the best Challenger event of every year. The German also looked good as he tested Juan Martin Del Potro at the Australian Open. Like Dent, Chiudinelli is struggling to build on his 2009 season; the 28-year-old Swiss has won a mere three of his last 12 matches. As such, count on Mayer advancing in two tight sets.
